Sylvester, Winifred, age 86, of Swift Current, SK, passed away on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current. Winifred is survived by a son, Gary (Linda) Sylvester; 5 grandchildren, Susie, Pam (Greg) Klassen, Cory, Roxanne (Wyatt) Hughes, Jeff; 4 great-grandsons, Dustin, Luke, Branden, Colton; a sister-in-law, Ella Sutherland of Rimby, AB; a brother-in-law, Mac McAdam of Calgary, AB; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, William (1954) & Maryann (1948) Sutherland; her husband, Albert (2001); a daughter, Lorraine Oliver (1994); 4 sisters, Emily, Etta, Chrissie, Marion; 2 brothers, Dave, Bob; parents-in-law, George (1991) & Ethel (1997) Sylvester; 3 brothers-in-law, Dan, Stan, Norman; and a sister-in-law, Myrtle Sutherland. Winifred - the second youngest of seven children, was born on March 22, 1921 to William & Maryann Sutherland, Ponteix, SK. She grew up on the family farm, 14 miles south of Ponteix. She received her formal education in the Westerliegh School District, 10 miles south of Ponteix, until she reached high school. Then she took correspondence courses at home for 2 years. In her youth, Winifred, enjoyed playing baseball and one of her most fondest memories was pitching for their ball team, which was called “Glenvern Stars”. She spent many Sundays and Sports Days competing against community ball teams. She worked out at several places, until she married Albert Sylvester on December 23, 1943. They moved to the Fairy Lake district where they continued farming until 1976, when they moved into Cadillac. She was kept very busy being janitor for the United Church (15 years), the Hall (9 years) and the Rink (9 years). She belonged to the U.C.W., the 50-50 Seniors Club, members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ladies Auxiliary. She also served on the T & C Recreation Board (catering) for several years which she enjoyed very much. Winifred enjoyed her houseplants and flowers, reading, gardening, walking, knitting and crocheting. She knitted about 15 siwash sweaters for others and also crocheted afghans for each of her grandchildren. Winifred and Albert both enjoyed dancing and took in all the dances until Albert had a stroke in 1991. They moved to an apartment in Swift Current in 1994, where she remained until her health no longer allowed her to live on her own. She spent her remaining time at the Palliser Regional Care Centre. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses of the Cypress Regional Hospital and also to all the staff at the Palliser Regional Care Centre. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 2:00 pm from the Swift Current Funeral Chapel, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Harold Benjamin officiating. The pianist for the service was Arlene Olson. “Amazing Grace”, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art” were sung by the congregation. A tribute to ‘grandma’, written by Jeff, and the life history were both tread by Rev. Harold Benjamin. Honorary pallbearers were “All those who shared in Winifred’s life”. The Interment was held at the Cadillac Cemetery, Cadillac, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Andre St. Jacques, Dennis Robinson, Donald Fischer, Terry Cooper, Wyatt Hughes and Branden Hughes. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK. |
