Dorothy Isabel (Newham) Bailey was born on October 1, 1919 at Lucky Lake, SK. She was the youngest of the eight children born to Joseph & Myra Newham. She took her grades 1-7 at the Vera School, SE of Lucky Lake, and traveled to school on horseback or by horse and buggy, she recalled these as ‘not pleasant days’. When she was in grade 7, she had 2 sisters that were in High School at Lucky Lake, so after Christmas she left the country school and went with her sisters to the Lucky Lake School. During school, Dorothy always played ball and was involved in the Field Days. She always enjoyed harvest time - we would come home from school and take lunch out to the men working on the threshing machines. Christmas concerts were very exciting, she always had a new dress for the occasion. She was always happy to get one gift. As kids growing up, they were always happy with lots to do: sleigh rides down hill, skating on ponds and playing ball. On Sundays, they usually had company. This included special meals and making homemade ice-cream. Her oldest sister, Myra, was a good cook and she usually made the dessert. She also taught Dorothy how to crochet and together they made a quilt. Graduation Day from Gr. 12 was just the last day of school - no gifts and no parties. Dorothy then went to Normal School in Saskatoon in 1940-1941. While at this school she was the goalie for the Girls Normal School Hockey Team. A quote from her yearbook states, “It was the first year the girls had gone throughout the season undefeated. In fact, only 1 goal was scored against them”. There to, Graduation was also just the last day of school, you waited to get your Teacher’s Certificate in the mail. Dorothy taught for 2 years at Radisson, then enlisted in the RCAF (Women’s Division), October 1943- December 1946. Basic training was at Rockcliffe and then she was posted at Davidson, SK, then at Winnipeg, MB and finally in Ottawa at the RCAF Headquarters. She became a Cpl. Clerk Administrator, working in an office answering phones, typing, etc. While she was in Ottawa, she was on the RCAF Softball Team, which also was a successful team. In 1946, Dorothy came home. She taught for one and a half years, and then on October 16, 1948, Dorothy and William (Bill) Chester Bailey were married. In1949, they moved to Matador, SK and lived in the Dorm until Heaths got there new house and they then moved into their old one. They were blessed with three sons, Dana Haven, January 25, 1951 in Elrose, SK: Blaine Young, February 2, 1952 in Kyle, SK: and Bevan William, March 24, 1953. Those were busy, but happy days. They hauled water from the community well for a while, and then they soon had running water. They also enjoyed lots of family holidays and often traveled to the States. Dorothy always loved to garden, and also made many afghans and quilts. She also started to curl while teaching at Radisson and curled until1987, winning many trophies, Legion Championships and played once in the Southern play offs as well. Over the years she was involved in a variety of organizations, Eastern Star, Legion Auxiliary, Kyle Curling Club, Kyle United Church Choir, Drop-In Centre and the Seniors Southview Apartments where she enjoyed living with all the residents. She also sponsored children through the Foster Parents Plan. Dorothy was very proud of her family which includes her three sons, Dana, Blaine and Bevan and their wives; and her 6 grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Muriel McGrath, of Moose Jaw, SK. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill, in 1979; her parents, Joseph & Myra; her sisters, Myra and Madge; her brothers, Claude, Leslie, Joe and Ernie.
