Donald Earl Sorensen passed away on Friday, October 12, 2007 at the Kyle Health Care Centre. Donald, the oldest of five children, was born on November 12, 1912 in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. He was brought as a baby to his parent’s homestead which was situated on the north side of the South Saskatchewan River, overlooking the river valley in the Saskatchewan Landing area. Donald attended the North Landing Country School for his elementary years and went to high school in Rosetown. Upon leaving school, he returned to work on the farm, raising cattle and growing grain. He worked long, hard hours, first working with horses and later with some of the earliest mechanical equipment. Some of these included the 1918 Titan IHC, which helped to break the sod on the Hudson Bay land south of Kyle, SK. On September 22, 1934, in a quiet ceremony in Swift Current, SK, he married Florabelle Reimche, of the Neidpath area. They made their home on the land located four miles south of Kyle where they raised one daughter, Shirley. They continued to farm this land until their retirement in 1972. In October of 1977, they built a new home in Kyle, SK where they have resided to this present day. Donald & Florabelle enjoyed boating and fishing during the summer months and after retirement, they took up camping and golfing. In 1945, they began spending the winter months in California where Florabelle had many relatives. In later years, they purchased a mobile home in Florida and for 19 years they spent the winters in the Bradenton and Sarasota areas. Many long lasting friends were made in these years including Erv Daley, the now retired Mobile Park owner, who still makes the much appreciated trips to Saskatchewan to visit them. His last visit was this past September, when he heard Donald was not well. Over the years, they have had many visits from friends that were made in Florida. Donald was predeceased by his parents, Chuck & Elsie Sorensen; one brother, Byron; one sister, Calla; two sisters-in-law, Barbara and Irene; and by three brothers-in-law, Benjamin, Ivan and Robert. He is survived by Florabelle, his wife of 73 years; one daughter, Shirley (Lyle) Van Buskirk of Kyle, SK; two grandchildren, Darcy of Vancouver, BC and Lynn (Ken) of Coutenay, BC; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Jamie and Connor of Coutenay, BC; one sister, Joyce of Kyle, SK; one brother, David of Kyle, SK; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Graveside Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 1:00 pm from the Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with Rev. John Barker of First United Church officiating. The life history and tribute to Uncle Donald was shared by Guy Sorensen. The pallbearers were Stephen Smith, Gerald Ericksteen, Guy Sorensen, Jay Sorensen, Orin Sorensen, Shawn Sorensen, Van Sorensen, Kim Sorensen and Donald Sorensen. A reception for family and friends was held at 3:00 pm from the Elks Community Hall, Kyle, SK. In honor of Mr. Donald Earl Sorensen, donations to the Kyle District Health Centre would be appreciated by the family.
