Name: Katherine Schafer

Passed away: November 20, 2007
Katherine Schafer went home to her Lord on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current, SK, at the age of 82. Katherine was born on August 1, 1925 in Kendal, SK to Michael & Elizabeth (nee Kuntz) Reiss. She left home to work for various families around the Mankota area and waitressed in Moose Jaw where she met many good friends. In 1947, Katherine married Xavier Schafer (1918-1983) and settled on his family farm in the Mankota-Hazenmore district. There, she worked hard raising and caring for their six children, Judy (Con) Vermette, Paul (predeceased 2004) (Holly) Schafer, Dennis (Lucy) Schafer, Vivian Schafer, Linda (Don Marshall), and Karen (Steve) Gloin, along with meeting all the demands of a busy country life. In 1980, Katherine and Xavier along with their oldest son, Paul, and his wife, Holly, ventured into business with the purchase of a motel in Swift Current, SK. Katherine diligently and proudly worked to maintain this establishment until her retirement in 1990. Katherine was a kind, compassionate, humble and faithful woman with a heart full of love. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she put the needs of others before her own to make the remembrances of her fond and cherished. She enjoyed spending time with her children; her grandchildren, Joel Vermette: Stephanie Schafer (Adam Brown): Elwood Bisskey (1980-2001): Xavier, Quinlan and Wildon Gloin; and her great-granddaughter, Hannah Schafer-Brown. She looked forward to Christmas celebrations and yearly summer get-togethers with her family which was always full of music making, food and laughter. Over the years, some other favorite pastimes included visiting with her many friends at the Co-op coffee shop and playing Canasta with her long-time friend, Amy, as well as with others at the Golden West Manor. The family wishes to thank Dr. A. Kielly, Dr. T.T. Khonje and the nursing staff that provided wonderful care to our mother during her stay in the hospital. A Prayer Service was held on Friday, November 23, 2007 at 7:00 pm from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Swift Current, SK with Julie Randall presiding. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at 10:00 am from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Swift Current, SK with Fr. Sathiadas Antony as Celebrant.
