Robert Irvine McKenzie passed away peacefully on Friday, November 30, 2007 at the Swift Current Care Centre with his daughter-in-law, Arlene, at his side. He was also in the presence of the nurses and caregivers who have been with him for the past year. Robert was predeceased by his wife, Gladys May McKenzie (Marie) of Birmingham, England; his parents Francis James McKenzie, Frances M. McKenzie and his step-mother, Margaret Laird McKenzie, all of Glasgow Scotland; his brother, Francis McKenzie and his sister, Gracie McKenzie, both of Glasgow, Scotland and numerous other extended family members and friends in Great Britain. Robert is survived by his son, Robert John McKenzie of Swan River, MB, his daughter-in-law, Arlene Cheryl McKenzie of Swift Current, SK, and his beloved granddaughters, Krissy Danielle McKenzie of Edmonton, AB and Janine Marie McKenzie-Ljunggren (Kelly) of Regina, Saskatchewan and his two great-grankittens, Gracie McKenzie and Chica Ljunggren; his best friend, Ellen Davis of Regina, SK, her children and their families, Verna Janz, Shirley Ofee and Bruce Davis. Also surviving Robert are his sister Jean Munro (Allan) of Dunedin, New Zealand, and his sister-in-law Elizabeth (Betty) McKenzie and her children, Colin and Jayne and their families of Glasgow, Scotland. Robert was born in Glasgow, Scotland, April 21st, 1910 and lived in Glasgow, Scotland, London, England and Birmingham England until he retired to Canada in 1980 to be closer to his granddaughters. In Canada, Grampa lived in Prince Albert, Regina and Swift Current, SK. His love of Scotland remained in his heart forever. Robert Irvine McKenzie married Gladys May Sedgley, on September 18th, 1936 in Birmingham, England, where they spent their married life. Robert was employed by the British Post Office (Civil Service Commission) beginning as a telegraph messenger riding his bike through the busy streets of London, working next as a junior accountant and working his way up the corporate ladder to be an Executive Officer at the time of his retirement. He served in the second World War with the British Army and participated in the second wave of D-Day. Robert enjoyed good health until the fall of 2006 when he fell and broke his hip and required surgery. After several months in the hospital he was unable to live on his own and moved to the Swift Current Care Centre. During his time at the Care Centre his days were filled with recalling memories and telling his stories to the nurses and other staff, planting flowers in the Spring, reading his books, and watching CNN. Grampa retained his highly intellectual mind and his wit until the end of his life. Grampa will be greatly missed and remembered for his many fascinating stories of his life; his sense of humor; his sarcasm; his intense love of his family, his beloved Scotland, his Folio Society books, bagpipes, highland dancing and scotch whiskey. We will miss Grampa every day but especially on his favorite day of the year…New Year’s Eve when he prepared and shared his feast for First Footing. A Celebration of his life will be held Friday, December 7th at 1:30 pm in the chapel of the Swift Current Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Fedunec officiating. There will be a memorial reception to honour Robert following the service. Special appreciation is extended to Michelle Young and the Green Braes Pipes and Drums and Amy Wilm, highland dancer, for their participation in the celebration. One last time, Grampa, and forever…“love you”. |
