Victor Cornelsen was born on July 23, 1919, in Herbert, SK to David & Sarah Cornelsen. He passed away on Friday, January 11, 2008 at the Prairie Health Care Centre, Cabri, SK. He was raised and worked in the Herbert area, until he ran away to join the forces. After his return from the war in 1946, he met his life’s partner, Mary Funk. They were married in 1947 in Herbert, SK. In 1960, he moved his family to Swift Current, SK: in 2003, he moved to Cabri, SK: and in 2005, he moved to the Prairie Health Care Centre in Cabri, SK.

Vic served in World War II with the 8th Recce and then the 14th Canadian Hussar. He landed on Juneau Beach and fought to free Holland. For 40 years, Vic was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #56. After Vic returned from the war, his life as a truck driver began, driving for numerous companies. In 1967, Vic bought his first semi and started his own business hauling cattle for Lang Transport, until his retirement in 1989. Vic was well known and respected in the cattle industry. Vic loved to fish, camp and travel, when he had the time. Having coffee in the morning with ‘the boys’ at the Husky was a must. Vic’s trucks, cars and yard were always meticulous. Vic will always be remembered for his passion of clean vehicles.

Vic was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Vic is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; his daughters, Debra (Lyle) Thoreson, Cabri, SK and Shirley Schmidt (Garth), Webb, SK; his grandchildren, Sharleen Thoreson, Lanette Thoreson (Lane) both of Swift Current, SK, Stacey (Christie) Schmidt, Gull Lake, SK and Michael Schmidt, Webb, SK; his great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Cody, Jordan and Tehya; a brother-in-law, Frank Klippenstein; a sister-in-law, Ann Lansberry; 2 nephews, Dwayne and Dennis; and by a niece, Nola. He was predeceased by his father, David, in 1936; his mother, Sarah, in 1989; his step-father, Peter S. Martins, in 1972; a son-in-law, Richard Schmidt, in 2001; a brother, Elmer, in 1957; a sister, Clara Klippenstein, in 2004; and by numerous step-brothers and cousins.

The Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 2:00 pm from the Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Cliff Janzen officiating. The pianist for the service was Leanne McConnell accompanied by Sheila Braun as organist. “Amazing Grace”, “Beyond the Sunset” and “We’re Marching to Zion” were sung by the congregation under the direction of Lucille Wall. Special music was provided by Pete & Leona Braun singing, “Daddy’s Hands” and “Go Bring my Children Home”. The eulogy and life history was brought by Ed Lang. Tributes were shared by the grandchildren. The Royal Canadian Legion, Swift Current Branch performed the Honor Guard. The Interment was held at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Sharleen Thoreson, Lanette Thoreson, Stacey Schmidt, Michael Schmidt, Cody Keller and Lane Pisiak. In memory of Vic Cornelsen, donations made to the Prairie Health Care Centre Auxiliary, Cabri, SK would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
