Dad was born in Russia on May 21, 1920, the oldest of nine children. He immigrated to Canada with his parents and sister Henrietta in 1926. They settled in the Beechy district where Dad grew up, received his schooling and started his farming career. In 1941, Dad was married to Maria Fast, in Virgil, Ontario. Shortly after their marriage, Dad served his country in the Second World War in a non-combative role, working on various infrastructure projects in Jasper. John & Maria farmed & ranched in the Beechy district with their family until 1960. In the fall of 1960, they moved to the Admiral district where Dad established a farming/ranching operation. Over the years, he was recognized as one of the top breeders of Registered Horned Hereford Cattle. Farming & ranching was one of Dad’s greatest joys in life. In 1978, Dad & Mom retired in Swift Current. After Mom passed away in 1999, Dad continued to live in his home until he moved to The Bentley, in 2003. He resided there for four years until September, 2007, when he had an unfortunate fall and was hospitalized for two months. He moved into the Palliser Regional Care Centre, where he was cared for by devoted staff members.
