Richard (Dick) Archibald Hamilton was born on July 13, 1915 to George & Bessie Hamilton. He was born on the homestead, south and west of Kyle, SK, as were his 3 brothers. Dick was schooled at North Landing School and in his younger years he worked for various farmers. He was also a ‘bouncer’ at the Kyle Hotel. Dick signed up and entered the Air Force in 1942, and started his training down east. During a spring leave, he came back home and married Loretta in 1943, in Saskatoon, SK. They returned to Ontario and their first son, David, was born in Belleville. In 1945, the war ended and the family moved to Vancouver where he found work at the Sash & Door Factory. Their second son, Terry, was born in Vancouver in 1946. The family moved to the Matador Co-op in 1947, and they started the life he always wanted, farming. In 1958, he became an independent farmer and the family moved to Kyle, SK. He continued to farm until David moved home from Calgary, AB in 1975, and started to take over the operation. Dick had many happy years of helping with the farm work and puttering around the home in Kyle and the cabin at Clearwater. Dick & Loretta moved into the Southview Apartments in 2004. Dick was moved into the Kyle Health Centre in the fall of 2007, where he resided and was cared for until his passing on Tuesday, October 21, 2008.
Dick will be missed by all his family. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Loretta; his two sons, David (Sandra) Hamilton of Kyle, SK and Terry (Marj) Hamilton of Coalhurst, AB; his 6 Grandchildren; and his 5 Great-grandchildren (and one more on the way). All boys, Grandpa was so proud! He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert, Jack and Hector.
Dick was laid to rest at the Turner Cemetery. |
