It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Redshaw. She peacefully died on Saturday December 20, 2008, to be with her heavenly Father, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mary was born in Shellmouth, MB in 1928. After being given up for adoption by her biological mother at a young age, Mary was shuffled through several foster homes. In 1944, George and Minnie Forbes of Mortlach, SK adopted Mary and she considered this the happiest memory of her childhood. Mary had 8 foster brothers and 2 foster sisters. Mary graduated from university and pursued a career as a teacher for 10 years in the country schools close to her home. In 1949, Mary married Howard Smith and they were blessed with their 4 children, Linda, Wendy, Bob and Rod. Mary was deeply saddened when she was predeceased by her daughters, Linda Sloan in 2002 and Wendy Gardner in 2005. In 2003, after living in Elbow, SK for 25 years, she moved to Swift Current to be closer to her youngest son and his family. Mary resided at the Prairie View Lodge where she quickly made new friends. Mary enjoyed gardening, reading, baking and cooking for family and friends. She looked forward to going to church every Sunday and taking time for her personal devotions each day of the week. Mary will be sadly missed by her family and friends, but it gives us great comfort to know that she was looking forward to being with her heavenly Father as well as reuniting with her daughters again. She is survived by her 2 sons, Bob Smith of Swift Current, Rod Smith (Angela) of Swift Current; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at 2:00 pm from the Elbow United Church, Elbow, SK with Lay Pastor Linda Greggersen officiating.
