Mabel Ethel Elliott (Smith) was born on November 24th, 1924, at Viscount, SK, the youngest in a family seven. She attended the Viscount School and graduated from grade 12 in 1942. She then attended “Normal School” in Saskatoon to become an elementary school teacher. She taught her first year in Major, SK. She then went on to teach at Golden Hill School for 2 years (between Viscount and Young), at Kinistino for a year, before moving on to Tisdale where she taught until 1953. Mabel then moved to Saskatoon where she taught at both Mayfair and Pleasant Hill Schools. In the early 1960’s, she moved to Edmonton where she taught until 1967. Mabel loved teaching and was very conscientious and reliable. She got along very well with staff and parents. She was very devoted to her students. Mabel met Jack Elliott in the late 1950’s. They continued to see each other after she moved to Edmonton. In the summer of 1967, she and Jack went to the Saskatoon Exhibition where Jack gave her a “diamond”. She was so thrilled to be engaged. She left Edmonton and they were married on October 7th, 1967. They lived on Jack’s farm until 1978 when they bought their present home in Kyle. Mabel did some substitute teaching in Kyle, but mainly stayed at home to help Jack. She enjoyed playing cards and on occasion played bingo with Hilda Jacobson.
