Abraham (Abe) Reimer was born on September 27th, 1925 in his Grandfather Schultz’s farm house, northwest of Main Centre, Saskatchewan. He was the eldest child of John and Tina Reimer and grew up on the farm neighbouring his grandparents. Life on the farm was difficult during the Depression years, but Abe soon had seven brothers and sisters to play with. He attended the local one-room schoolhouse where he learned many important lessons and had adventures that he recounted all his life. By the age of 16 he was working on local ranches and spent some time working in a saw mill in Edson, Alberta and logging in Langley, British Columbia. By 1948 Abe was back in Main Centre where he started farming himself. He met the love of his life, Adeline Mikulcik, who was teaching school in the area and boarding with the nearby family of Abe’s good friend Pete Braun. The two were married in Glenside, Saskatchewan on June 2, 1949 and returned to live on the farm west of Main Centre. From a young age, it was apparent that Abe had a gift for healing as he worked on injured dogs and horses. His talent for healing grew, and in order to become more skilled he decided to study massage therapy through correspondence from Kelberg’s College in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from their program in 1954 and began what became a 54 year Therapeutic Massage practice; first on the farm, then at Waldeck, and eventually in Herbert and Swift Current. Over the years he made trips to Chicago and England to upgrade his massage training. In addition he served as President of the Saskatchewan Massage Therapy Association for twenty years and was President of the Canadian branch of the London and Counties Society of Physiologists (“LCSP”) for seven years. He was awarded a Fellowship in the LCSP in 1984 and Honors from Wellington College in 2007. To pass on his gift for healing Abe joined together with his colleague Don Bennett to found and operate the Northern Institute of Massage in Regina and Winnipeg where hundreds of students were trained in massage therapy. After eighteen years the school was sold to Randy Ellingson, himself a graduate of the school. In 1957 Abe moved the family to Herbert where he and Adeline lived for over 40 years. Abe was active in civic affairs and served on Town Council for four years and as Mayor of Herbert for eight years. In 2003 Abe was honored with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for community service, awarded by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. Abe had a strong faith in God and also spent many hours in service to the Church. He felt blessed to have witnessed to many people while he worked to heal them physically. Abe died on October 12, 2009 after a lengthy and courageous battle with prostate cancer. Abe is survived by his loving and devoted wife Adeline, his daughters Eunice and Melodie (Kevin), sons Lawrence (Cindy) and Barry (Michelle), sisters Olga (Archie) and Elvena (Frank), brothers Henry (Selma) and Edward (Betty), grandchildren Gina (Phil), Geoff (Boneta), Landon (Kyla), Michael, Alyssa, Duke, Ben and Parker, great grandchildren Spencer, Preston, Mackenzie, Madison and Macey. He is predeceased by his parents John and Tina, his brothers John and Benjamin, sister Anne and son-in-law Dr. Walter Koehler. The Funeral service was held on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 2:00 pm from the Trailview Alliance Church, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Brad Julien of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church officiating.
