Rita Helm was born on June 24, 1919, to William & Celima Graham in Eston, SK. Rita graduated school in 1937 and pursued a career in Nursing. She received her training at The Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert, SK and graduated in 1940.She worked in the Surgery Department until 1941. She moved back to Eston in 1943 and found work at the EstonUnionHospital. The same year Rita met her love and married Charles R. Helm. Soon a family of four children were welcomed: a son Graham, a daughter Rae, a son Garry and a daughter Sherry whom they raised at their house at 311 Allen Drive in Swift Current, SK.
Rita spent countless hours at her church, as a caregiver and giving back to her community. She was named “Swift Current First Citizen of the Year”. On Saturday, January 2, 2010, at the Herbert Integrated Facility, Rita of 90 years, 6 months peacefully journeyed to meet her Saviour Jesus Christ. Rita was predeceased by her parents, William & Celima Graham; her husband, Charles R. Helm; her children, Graham Helm, Rae Westendorp and Sherry Helm; her sisters, Ruby Portz, Jean Graham; and by a brother, Lionel Graham. She is survived by her son, Garry Helm, Aldergrove, BC; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Prayer Service was held on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 7:00 pm from the Swift Current Funeral Chapel with Vivian Bosch officiating. The Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 2:00 pm from Christ the Redeemer Parish, Swift Current, SK with Fr. Sathiadas Antony officiating. The pianist for the service was Marlene Dolter with Arnold Schroeder leading the choir and congregational singing. The soloist was Shirley Coté. Readings were read by Mary Legros and Marita Salberg. The ushers and Honor Guard was performed by the CWL. The Interment Service was held at the Mount PleasantBurialPark with the following serving as pallbearers, Henk Westendorp, Brad Stevenson, Lloyd Portz, Cliff Stevenson, Marianne Wiebe and Bonnie Helm-Nothover. In memory of Rita Helm, donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society-Saskatchewan Branch or to Christ the Redeemer Building Fund would be appreciated by the family.
