Bernice Rode Obituary

Bernice Rode passed away peacefully at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at the age of 87.

Born Bernice Katherine Dyck on January 23, 1935 near Rush Lake, SK, she grew up on the family farm in the Prairie View area north of Rush Lake. The family later moved to Herbert, SK where she met her future husband, Kenneth Rode.

They were married in 1954 and resided in Swift Current, Shaunavon, and Saskatoon. By then, Lyle, Blake, and Orchid joined the Rode family. In 1967, the family moved to a dairy farm near Rush Lake. In 1979, the family moved to Swift Current where Bernice and Ken owned a fabric store. Sewing was one of her hugest passions. Bernice taught sewing classes in various locations throughout the province, where several thousand people learned to make everything from jeans to mukluks to ski wear.

Family was extremely important to Bernice. She was completely devoted to Ken, who passed away shortly after they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren were doted on by her and Ken.

Bernice was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Rode; her parents, George & Mary Dyck; her brothers, David, Arthur, and Wilbert Dyck; and by her sister, Clara Giesbrecht.

Left to cherish Bernice’s memory are her sons, Lyle (Lesley) (Lethbridge, AB) and Blake (Michele) (Coaldale, AB); her daughter, Orchid (Mike) (Asquith, SK); her grandchildren, Courtney (Chris), Brantly, Sydney, Rockelle (Mike), Keilan, and Mic; her great-grandchildren, Jackson, Oliver, and Tallica; her sister, Margaret Schroeder-Bryson; and by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The Celebration of Life for Bernice Rode was held on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 11:00 am from Trailview Alliance Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Larry Hurst officiating. The tribute was given by Corrie Dyck-Lewis. The ushers in the church were Phil Henderson and Stan Aikens. The service was recorded and can be viewed here.

The Private Family Internment Service took place from Ebenezer Cemetery, Rush Lake, SK with Bernice’s grandchildren serving as Pallbearers.
