Welcome to the memorial page for

Betty Dodge

October 24, 2015

Kate Louise (Betty) Dodge, age 95, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Wolf Willow Health Centre in Eastend, SK. Betty was born in Cabri, SK on April 2, 1920 — the fourth of six children born to William and Lily Humphries. Betty enjoyed school, although getting to Kings County School could be a challenge — as it meant walking or horseback riding four miles to school and back home again, no matter the season or weather. When Betty’s mother passed away in 1935, Betty gave up school to become the homemaker for the family. Going to community dances with neighbours and friends was a highlight for Betty, where Charlie Dodge soon became her favourite partner. Betty and Charlie were married in 1945 and worked tirelessly together raising cattle, pigs, chickens, and selling eggs. In 1947 Carol was born, followed by the twins Kenneth and Keith in 1949, and Carman in 1952. Betty always enjoyed the outdoors — her favourite events were looking for that first spring crocus, picnics at the river, her large garden, and berry picking. For many years while the children were in school and Charlie did carpentry work, Betty tended to the house and the chicken coop — gathering and cleaning hundreds of eggs three times a day was no easy task. Preparing chickens for the freezer and for sale was a family event. Betty’s role was to eviscerate the birds and prepare them for the freezer, she must have cleaned thousands of chickens over her life on the farm. In 1971, Charlie & Betty sold the farm and moved into Cabri. After moving to town, Betty was involved with the church, the choir and the seniors. Betty developed her card-playing skills from her love of arithmetic — she would play whist, bridge, or cribbage with anyone who needed a partner and especially enjoyed playing low-card wild rummy with her family. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Charlie: her brothers, John, Leonard, and Richard; her sister, Vonda; and by her niece, Judith. Betty leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Carol (Henry) Lebastard, Ken (Donelle) Dodge, Keith (Doris) Dodge, and Carman Dodge; her grandchildren, Bart (Lisa), Bruce, Kimberly (Michael), Christopher, Jeremy (Andrea) and Kevin; her great-grandchildren, Genis, Aline, Nathan, Alison; her step-great-grandchildren, Tyler and Katlin; her sister, Netta; and by many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, November 2, 2015 at 1:30 pm from the Legion Hall, Cabri, SK with Elaine Little officiating. The organist for the service was Lexie Culham with special music brought by the Cabri Community Choir. “Blessed Assurance” and “I Love to Tell the Story” were4 sung by the congregation. The ushers were Ken Dodge and Bruce Lebastard. The Interment Service was held at the Cabri Cemetery, Cabri, SK. In memory of Betty Dodge, donations made to the Cabri Hospital Auxiliary, Box 104, Cabri, SK, S0N 0J0 would be appreciated by the family.
