Horst Hennig

Our beloved husband, father, and uncle, Horst Hennig, age 81, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK.

He was the best God could have made and we were so blessed to have Horst in our lives. He had a heart of gold and always put others needs ahead of his own. In May, he was diagnosed with bone cancer and faced the news with dignity and courage.

Horst Adolf Hennig was born in Borovo, Poland on December 12, 1940 to Oswald & Ottilie Hennig. Due to the war, he and his family fled Poland and after some time in both East and West Germany, immigrated to Canada in 1953. Horst quickly adapted to life in Canada and was eager to take any opportunity that was presented to him. His workplaces included the Pioneer Co-op and the Helium Plant. While at the Co-op he met the love of his life, Alice Olson, where she also worked.

On October 9, 1965, Horst & Alice were married and had two children, Barry Russell (September 7, 1968) and Barbara Jean (April 22, 1971). The family moved to the farm in the Leinan, SK area in 1975. Horst enjoyed learning, had a strong work ethic, and loved living and working on the farm.

He enjoyed carpentry and all aspects of repairs and renovations and could fix almost anything. After moving to the farm, he extensively renovated the farmhouse. This interest continued, he and Alice renovated several more homes in Swift Current.

He always enjoyed travelling and new experiences. While raising their children, time was often made for waterskiing in the summer afternoons, family holidays, and many camping trips. Later, his travels included going overseas with many trips to New Zealand after his son moved there in 1997.

After spending 35 years on the farm, Horst & Alice retired to Swift Current. Horst always kept busy and believed in personal fitness, he could be seen riding his bicycle and walking in the community parks. He loved the outdoors.

Horst leaves to mourn his wife of 56 years, Alice Hennig; his daughter, Barbara King (Greg Larsen); his sister, Trudy (Henry) Blanke; his sisters-in-law, Marie Hennig and Matilda Olson; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Horst was predeceased by his son, Barry Hennig; his parents, Oswald & Ottilie Hennig; his brothers, Senno Hennig and Harry Hennig; his sister, Freda (Tom) Evans; his parents-in-law, Frank & Agnes Olson; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Arthur (Alvera) Olson, Erwin (Opal) Olson, Edward (Vi) Olson, Ellen (Bob) Healey, Francis (Archie) Klassen, and Ronald (Marion) Olson; and by several nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service for Horst Hennig was held on Monday, August 15, 2022 at 2:00 pm from St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Greg Kiel officiating. “Nearer My God to Thee,” “Children of the Heavenly Father,” and “Abide with Me” were sung by the congregation with Sharon Lang serving as organist. Psalm 121 and John 11:17-27 were read by Janet Hut. The ushers in the church were Leon & Freda Singbeil. The service was recorded and can be viewed here. 

The Private Family Interment Service will take place at a later date from Prairie West Cemetery, Leinan, SK.

In memory of Horst Hennig, donations made to the Allan Blair Cancer Lodge, the Dr. Noble Irwin Foundation, or the St. Olaf Memorial Fund would be appreciated by the family.
