Jake Thiessen Obituary

Jake Thiessen’s earthly journey came to a close on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at Willow Creek Manor, Swift Current, SK.

Jacob “Jake” Thiessen was born on May 14, 1927 to David & Margaretha Thiessen in St. Anne, MB. Jake was always a “Get’ Er Done” kind of guy. If it meant running a trap line to gather up enough pelts to purchase a Case tractor or working long days in the field, no challenge was too big when it stood in the way of reaching his goals!

It was during a year of study at Swift Current Bible Institute in 1945 that Jake met an attractive, spunky Swift Current gal — Mary Brown. Jake & Mary were married on June 24, 1950. As a “Tiller of the Earth,” farming was Jake’s passion. Whether it was milking Holsteins, calving Simmentals, farrowing hogs, tossing bales, cultivating fields, or harvesting grain, he loved it all.

Music was also dear to Jake’s heart, and he spent many years singing in Men’s Gospel Choirs and Barbershop Quartets. His harmonica melodies were a common musical feature at Willow Creek Manor.

When the Thiessen Farm responsibilities transitioned to the next generation, Jake & Mary began to travel. They discovered the pleasant Arizona winter climate and found a warm community with good friendships among other like-minded Snowbirds in a Yuma RV Park.

Jake was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Mary, on May 21, 2023. Jake is survived by his sons, Bruce (Donna) and Lloyd (Linda); his grandchildren Jeremy (Erin), David (Maureen), Stephen (Melissa), Julia (Jon) Diment, Carla (Aaron) Phoenix, and Derek (Jill); and by his great-grandchildren, Liam, Karis, Brady, Silas, Avery, Arlo, Willem, Barrett, Kesler, Benji, Hazel, Harrison, Elliot, and Elise.

The Private Family Committal Service for Jake Thiessen was held on Friday, November 10, 2023 from the Swift Current Funeral Home Chapel, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Herman J. Wiebe officiating. “Saviour, Like a Shepherd Lead Us” were sung by the congregation under the leadership of Bruce and Lloyd Thiessen. The Scripture reading, Psalm 23 and Romans 8:1-3a, was given by Zach Stephaniuk. Special music was brought by a family quartet, who sang “Each Step I Take.” The tribute was given by Bruce Thiessen.

The service was recorded and is available to view upon request from the family, the service card is available to view below.
