Joe Metz

Joseph “Joe” Metz, age 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 22, 2017 with his family by his side at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK. Joseph “Joe” Gotlieb Metz was born June 7, 1927 to Gotlieb & Francis Metz near Richmound, SK. He grew up and attended school in Richmound. Joe lost his father when he was eight years old and had to grow up very quickly to help his mother support the family. Joe married Joyce Maryann Smith on August 5, 1954. They began farming in the Carmichael area in 1955. Joe & Joyce raised their four daughters — Janet, Jane, Kate, and Rosemarie — on the family farm south of Carmichael. After retiring from farming in 1978, Joe & Joyce built a home in Gull Lake, SK where Joe started a new career — his junkyard. They enjoyed travelling throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Europe. They treated their girls and son-in-law, Ron, to a fabulous Caribbean Cruise in 2004. They enjoyed playing cards with their friends, fishing, and spending time with their family. They always took time to visit with their girls and share in special celebrations. Joe treasured visiting with anyone who took the time to visit, and he loved his daily visits to Coffee Row. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Joyce; his daughters, Janet (Ron), Kate, and Rosie (Shawn); his eight grandchildren, Denene (Robert), Jodi (Kenneth), Greg (Laurie), Lisa (Kenton), Kirstin, Jeffrey (Maria), Christopher (Dara), and Jenni (Tyler); his twelve great-grandchildren, Liam, Isaac, Ava, Olin, Bella, Alexandra, Preston, Nolan, Maxwell, Keira, Samson, and Jayden; and by his siblings, Alvin (Marg), and Winnie. Joe was predeceased by his daughter, Jane; his parents, Gotlieb & Francis Metz; his stepfather, Alex Stein; his infant brother, Thomas; and by his sister, Rosemarie. Joe will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him and loved him. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 1:00pm from St. Anne Catholic Church, Gull Lake, SK with Father Anthony Padayatty officiating. The pianist for the Memorial Mass was Pam McConnell, the organist was Sharon Dahl. The Eulogy was given by Jeffrey Schlachter. Gordon & Gale Weinberger served as readers. The ushers in the church were Glenn Metz and Blaine Wilde. The Interment Service was held from the Gull Lake Cemetery with Liam Jensen and Isaac Jensen serving as Urnbearers. Greg Paul, Jeffrey Schlachter, Christopher Ober, Robert Geissler, Kenneth Abrey, Kenton Emms, and Tyler Reid served as Honorary Pallbearers. In memory of Joe Metz, donations made to the St. Anne Roman Catholic Building Fund would be appreciated by the family.
