Lavinia Johnson

January 4, 2018

The family of Lavinia Johnson, age 96, of Herbert, SK and Morse, SK, is saddened to announce her passing on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK. Lavinia Arlean Johnson was born December 7, 1921 — the eighth of nine children born to Sylvain & Celesta Goessaert — on the family farm near Minton, SK. She married Melvin Johnson on November 11, 1942. They lived in Moose Jaw, SK for a short time, before moving to Morse, SK, where they lived for many years. Lavinia was an avid reader and a Toronto Blue Jay’s fan. She enjoyed going on vacation with her family, trips to casinos and bingo — where she was always lucky — and working on the family farm. Lavinia was an active member of the Morse Seniors Association, the Morse United Church UCW, and the Order of Royal Purple (female auxiliary of Elks Canada). Lavinia moved into Herbert Manor in 2002, where she lived until the fall of 2017, when she fell and broke her ankle. She then moved to Herbert Nursing Home, where she lived until her passing.

Lavinia was predeceased by her loving husband, Melvin Johnson; her eldest son, Ronald Johnson; her parents, Sylvain & Celesta Goessaert; and by her siblings, Palmyre, Gabrielle, Basile, Andre, William, Laura, Norma, and Irene. Lavinia is survived by her children, Dennis (Kathleen) Johnson and Bradley Johnson; her grandchildren, Marilyn (Mark) Dietz, Katrina Johnson, Cory (Chantel) Johnson, and Chris (Kelly Downton) Johnson; her great-grandchildren, Derrick and Adam Dietz, Eliana and Jacob Johnson, and Jordyn and Jessi Johnson; her daughter-in-law, Kathleen (Ron, predeceased) Johnson; and by her sisters-in-law, Ruth (Bill, predeceased) Goessaert, Laura (Andre, predeceased) Goessaert, and Alta (Harvey, predeceased) Johnson; and by several nieces and nephews, including Joan Melle, Rod (Barbara Banbridge) Johnson, and Roxanne Hagley.

The Funeral Service for Lavinia Johnson was held on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 2:00 pm from First United Church, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Annette Taylor officiating. “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Abide with Me” were brought as special music by David Chobot. The eulogy was given by Marilyn Dietz. The Interment Service was held Friday, January 12, 2018 at 11:00 am from Sunset Cemetery, Moose Jaw, SK with Mark Dietz, Derrick Dietz, Adam Dietz, Rodney Johnson, Michael Montgomery, and Douglas Montgomery serving as Pallbearers. In memory of Lavinia Johnson, donations made to the Herbert Manor would be appreciated by the family.
