Welcome to the memorial page for

Lydia Neufeld

March 5, 2015

Lydia J. Neufeld was born to John M. & Helena (Peters) Neufeld on February 16, 1928, on a farm in Rush Lake, SK. She was the 6th of 9 children. She attended Rockside School until the age of 7, when the family moved to a farm north of Herbert, SK. She then attended Coxley School until grade 10. The farm was a long distance from church and so the family joined others to worship at Los Angeles School, about 2 miles away. She finished her last 2 years of school at Herbert High where she graduated and at the insistence of her father, began her nurses training at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. After graduating with her Nursing degree, she spent some time working in Ontario and Winnipeg before returning to Herbert to work at the Herbert Hospital and to care for her aging parents, especially her father who had been in a serious accident. Lydia was bashful, avoiding the spotlight at all cost, but to anyone in need she was the “go to person”. She was always shuttling people who needed a ride, baking for people, especially her nieces and nephews (her specialties were sausage buns, cheese buns, cinnamon buns and of course her famous hash), and knitting sweaters for newborn babies in the family. She also loved gardening. She was a modern day Dorcus. Lydia moved to a senior’s condo in Swift Current, SK in 2010. This placed her close to family who had also relocated and to Tim Horton’s, her most favorite coffee ever!! In 2013, she moved to the Bentley in Saskatoon. On most afternoons and evenings she could be found doing what she did best, helping in the dining room, setting tables and doing whatever she could to help the staff. On Monday, March 2, 2015, Lydia suffered a serious stroke. Family quickly surrounded her at Saskatoon RUH, and were able to interact with her and provide comfort as best they could. On Thursday, March 5, 2015, God took Lydia, age 87, home to be with Him. Lydia was predeceased by her sisters, Frieda Arendt, Kay Friesen, Helen Neufeld and Mary Klassen; and by her brother, Henry Neufeld. She is survived by her sisters, Elma Wiebe and Nettie Falk; her brother John (Anne) Neufeld; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service was held on Friday, March 13, 2015, at 2:00 pm from the Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Bob Cappelle officiating.  The pianist for the service was Pat Neufeld. “All the Way My Savior Leads Me” and “Great is Thy Faithfulness” were sung by the congregation under the direction of Robert Neufeld. Tributes were shared by Pat Poetker and Kathy Priebe (nieces) and by Marion Solberg (friend and colleague). The obituary was brought by Phil Neufeld with Mona Neufeld reading scripture from Isaiah 40:28-31 and Psalm 138. The ushers in the church were Ken Falk, Brian Shygera, Greg Siemens and Ron Mathies. Honorary Pallbearers were, All Lydia’s nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. The Interment Service preceded the Funeral Service and was held at the Herbert Cemetery, Herbert, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Don Wiebe, John Neufeld, Phil Neufeld, Ken Falk, Robert Neufeld, Les Friesen, Ted Friesen and Roland Falk.
