Margaret Sillerud, age 96, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK. Margaret was born June 22, 1921 to Torsten & Anna Tjeltveit — she was proud to be the daughter of Norwegian immigrants who homesteaded in the Lancer area, SK. Her career began as a teacher in a one room schoolhouse called Holborn, then as a classroom teacher in Lancer. In 1948, Margaret began working with the Swift Current Rural Division as a travelling teacher’s consultant and unit librarian until her retirement in 1978. Her love of teaching, especially primary reading, enriched countless lives.
Margaret and her husband, Jim, were also farmers in the Abbey area. Their leisure time was spent rock hounding, chokecherry picking, and listening to old-time music. Her retirement years were spent documenting family history and her Norwegian roots, playing word games with her beloved Jim, and following baseball and curling on television.
Margaret was predeceased by her sweetheart, Jim Sillerud, on January 8, 2017; her parents, Torsten & Anna Tjeltveit; and by her siblings, Mary Hyde (1953), Carl Tjeltveit (1965), and Jenny Elliott (1983). Margaret is survived by her nephews and niece, Lars (Dionne) Tjeltveit, Bill (Jan) Hyde, and Carla (Louis) Lafrance, and their families; her sister-in-law, Edith (Mel) Noess; and by Jim’s niece, nephew, and their families.
Special thanks to the Bentley Staff and Jen for the comforts they provided Margaret and Jim in their twilight years.
Margaret’s ashes will be scattered at a later date.
