Maude Leola Campbell (nee Carruthers), age 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2017, at The Meadows, with her son Kevin by her side. It is with great sadness that we announce her passing, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Maude is survived by her daughter, Val (John) Wiebe of Regina, SK – grandchildren, Jeffrey, Amanda (Daniel), great-grandchildren, Gavin, Addison: her daughter, Heather (Dale) Brigham of Medicine Hat, AB – grandchildren, Ryan, Stephanie (Brent), great-grandchildren, Makenzie, Ryden, Emerson: Trista (Andrew), great-grandchild, Dallin; her son, Kevin (Lee) Campbell of Swift Current, SK – grandchildren, Alexandra, Clark, Kyle; two sisters, Ella Mercer and Iris Saftner; and by numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill (William) Campbell, 1987; daughter, Joyce Eileen Schumaker, 2008; grandchild, Clark’s mother, Margaret Curley, 2010; son, James Frank, 2012; son-in-law, Wayne Schumaker, 2016; her parents; one sister; and by three brothers. Maude was born in Shaunavon, SK on July 30, 1929 to Garnet & Sara Carruthers. She attended school in the Wilhelmina School District (south of Webb), the Elmwood School and the Swift Current College Institute (Beatty High School) both in Swift Current, graduating Grade 12 in 1949. She then went on to Normal School (Teachers College) in Moose Jaw, SK. Maude taught two years of school at the Courcelette School. This was a very small country school, but with students ranging from grade school into high school. While teaching there, she met her future husband, Bill Campbell, who farmed nearby. They were married in December of 1951 in Swift Current, SK. Their wedding took place on a very cold winter day and their wedding pictures did not survive as the film froze from the cold. Maude’s active years were all spent in the Neville district and she was kept busy raising a family of five, gardening, as well as being an accomplished seamstress, sewing clothes for the entire family and herself. She made the time to be very involved with the United Church community, as secretary of the Church Board, the UCW where she also served as treasurer, and was a faithful attendee of church services and member from 1958 until the church closed. She was also a member of the local Neville Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Branch #328, Ladies Auxiliary and provided countless hours of volunteer work in the community in general. Maude was very social and enjoyed visiting with neighbors and friends. Certain times of the year were important to Maude, such as Christmas, weddings and birthdays. She also always made time to visit family and friends when they were sick or under the weather. In later years, after living for a few years in the town of Neville, she moved into an apartment at Prairie View Lodge in Swift Current. She was a resident of the Prairie Pioneer Lodge before moving to The Meadows where she resided until her passing. The family would like to send a huge heart-felt thank you to the caring and compassionate nurses and staff that worked with Mom at the Lodge and at The Meadows. Mom was one of their favorite clients because they could usually coax a smile out of her. Maude will forever be treasured in the hearts of her family & friends.
