Welcome to the memorial page for

Sidney Moffitt

October 8, 2017

Sidney Moffitt, age 91, passed away Sunday, October 8, 2017 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK. Sidney Minor Moffitt was born June 27, 1926 to Minor & Dorothy Moffitt — the seventh of eight children — on a dairy farm north of Swift Current. When Sidney was twelve, the entire Moffitt family decided to move to Oregon. When he was sixteen, he decided to enlist and fight in WWII. He joined the US Navy in 1943 and served aboard the USS Yakatat for two and a half years in the Pacific theatre. Upon his return from war, Swift Current beckoned Sidney back, where he met his future wife at a dance held at the Elks Hall. In 1950, he married Madeline Trimble, and they spent their honeymoon moving to Oregon. The Moffitt’s were a restless bunch, always searching for “better farmland.” And so, in 1954, some of the family decided to move from Oregon to South Carolina — where cotton, corn and soybeans were the main crops. They spent fourteen years farming in South Carolina, then decided it was time to make a “full circle” and move back to Saskatchewan, where Madeline’s family all lived.  Sidney & Madeline bought a farm north of Webb (Lloyd District) and farmed there for 48 years. He had farming in his blood, and continued to farm until he was 90. Gardening and spending time in his beloved orchard made Sidney very happy. On many a winter night, Sidney & Madeline could often be found playing Scrabble. Sidney loved spending time with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren — he had a very gentle and loving way with them, and they loved him back. He and his son, John, enjoyed refurbishing old tractors together, and spent several years flying radio controlled planes. Sidney will be missed by his children, Gary Moffitt (Great Falls, MT) and Joyce (Darryl) Kettner (Medicine Hat, AB); his daughter-in-law, Brenda Moffitt (Swift Current); his son-in-law, Dennis Klassen (Blairmore, AB); his thirteen grandchildren, Jeffrey, Sabrina, Richard, Amanda, Jodi, Patrick, Kevin, and Michelle Moffitt, Darren, Janelle, and Dwayne Kettner, and Andrea and Chad Klassen; his twenty-eight great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. Sidney was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Madeline (Trimble) Moffitt in 2014; his daughter, Gail Klassen, in 2011; his son, John Moffitt, in 2014; and Sid was the last of his siblings, who all lived in Oregon, to pass away.

The Funeral Service for Sidney Moffitt was held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 11:00 am from the Swift Current Funeral Home Chapel, Swift Current. The obituary was read by Richard Moffitt, a reading was given by Darren Kettner. Those in attendance had a time of sharing, followed by a video presentation. The Interment Service was held at St. John’s Cemetery, Antelope District, SK with Jeff Moffitt, Richard Moffitt, Kevin Moffitt, Darren Kettner, Dwayne Kettner, and Dennis Klassen serving as Pallbearers.
