Cornelius Martens Obituary

Cornelius (Cornie) Martens, aged 83, passed away peacefully at his home in Fort Macleod Alberta on Friday, April, 12, 2024 after a short and intense battle with cancer.

Cornie was born on April 24, 1940 to Jacob and Marie Martens in Blumenort, Saskatchewan; he was the fifth of nine children. After attending Cedar Hill School, near the family farm, he embarked on a remarkable life adventure in agriculture, business and politics.

Cornie married Constance (Connie) Winslow on May 20, 1967 in Swift Current Saskatchewan and started grain and cattle farming at their Cedar Hill Farm 40km south of the city. Together they had two children: Darrin Jacob Martens and Christine Louise Martens.

A people person, Cornie enjoyed his time both as a hotel proprietor in Frontier and Cadillac and selling farm equipment and vehicles in the southwest of the province. Perhaps his greatest achievement was his public service to the people of the Rural Municipality of Lac Pelletier No. 107 where he served as Reeve for over 30 years. A devoted community advocate, and supporter Cornie believed in the family farm and rural way of life.

After his retirement from farming and public life he relocated, with his wife, to Fort Macleod, Alberta, so they could be closer to family. The move did not diminish his friendships or connections with those from the greater Swift Current area.

A celebration of life will be held at Swift Current Funeral Home on April 22, 2024 at 2 pm. A lunch will be served at the Modern Café following the celebration.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
