Marie Funk

Marie Funk was born to Johan and Helena Friesen on July 19, 1927. She attended Iris School through Grade 8 and did correspondence for part of high school. She was baptized in 1947. Having known Ernie as a child when their parents would visit each other and the kids played hide and seek, it was not until the spring of 1949 that they had their first date. She married Ernie Funk on July 16, 1950 in a garden wedding at her parents’ farm in Reinfeld. They lived with his parents for 8 years and 1 day. They bought their own place ½ mile west of Hamburg, where they planted a shelter belt and fruit trees. Both of them loved gardening, a skill that Ernie had inherited from his dad and she from her parents.

In 1958 a revival swept through the area. Mom had submitted to God many years earlier but had no knowledge of how to grow in faith. It was at this time that both Mom and Dad surrendered their lives to Jesus and received assurance of their salvation. I John 5:13 “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son, of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.”

Dad passed away very suddenly on September 2, 1981, with full assurance to be with Jesus. Mom stayed on the farm until September 21, 2004 when she bought a house in Swift Current.

In Mom’s words: “Day by day the Lord kept me and gives me strength. I memorized Scripture verses and chapters which gave me courage to carry on. I also took Bible courses by correspondence. Isaiah 41:10 and 54:5 are precious verses.”

“I pray daily for my children and grandchildren and my greatest desire is that they walk in truth and in God’s love (III John 1:1-4). I miss them all so very much. I want to see you all in heaven with Jesus where we’ll be together for all eternity!”

Mom was predeceased by her husband Ernest in 1981; her parents; and most of her siblings. She is survived by her older brother, John Friesen; her brother-in-law, Arnold Lang; her sister-in-law, Nellie Funk; numerous nieces and nephews; her five children: Evelyn (Dan) Peck, three daughters, Renee (John) Rinehart, children Willow, Malachi; Rachelle (Evan) Keech, children, Cooper, Ace, Maddie; Roxanne (Robbie) Mitchell, children, Ezra, Caleb, Nathan, David: Les Funk, four children, Tara Lee; Brittany (Jarid) Berglund, children, Tucker, Clyde, Luke; Rocky (Joyelle), children, Benjamin, Lynden, Nellie, Emilie, Simon; Kacey (Mike) Lepp, children, Wade, Ry, Heidi, Josie: James Funk, two children, Alex; Abigail: Jerry (Lee) Funk, three daughters, Nicole (Colby) Anderson; Amy (Clark) Caldwell; Rebecca (Cole) Wall: Jack (Barbie) Funk, four children, Drew; Rachel (Josh) Wilson; Kynsie (Brandon) Riedel, daughters, Lively and Adalie; and Lainey Funk.

Mom breathed her last breath at 11:50 pm on February 2, 2024.

Mom, you were a legend! We will miss you so much but rejoice with you that you are enjoying the pleasures of your forever home with Jesus and reunited with the love of your life.
