Delbert Zacharias, age 74, passed away at 6:18 pm on Monday, November 12, 2018 at the General Hospital, Regina, SK after complications from surgery. Delbert Ralph William Zacharias was born at 12:10 am on March 19, 1944 at the Swift Current Union Hospital, Swift Current, SK — the third oldest son of Johnny & Marea Zacharias.
He met his future wife, Betty Dyck, after the family moved from Beaver Flat, SK to Glen Ker, SK where they became neighbours and Delbert became friends with Betty’s brothers. Delbert & Betty were married July 18, 1964 in Herbert, SK. They lived and raised their family in and around Waldeck, SK until his passing. Delbert & Betty welcomed their first child, Tamara Joan, on August 1, 1968, followed by Stacey Leanne on February 13, 1971 and Michael Ralph James on May 1, 1974. The family continued growing and he became a proud grandfather to grandsons Brent and Matthew (born to Tamara & Andrew) and granddaughters Kelsey and Sarah (born to Stacey & Jeff), and Breena and Elayna (born to Mike and Kristin). The blessings grew even more in 2017 when he became a great-grandpa to twin boys, Maverick and Stephen, and Chloe.
Besides family and trucking, music was a huge passion of Delbert’s. The Zacharias family was extremely musical, and he enjoyed playing and listening to music from a very young age — every family gathering involved music. His face lit up and he was totally in his element chording along with his brothers, sister, and cousins playing songs they had played since they were kids.
He started trucking at the age of 18 and worked for several trucking companies over the years. He owned a gravel truck and hauled cattle for most of his early trucking days. He worked at Motorways for 15 years until 1993, when he did a short stint with Trimac. In 1996, Delbert joined Dinius Enterprises Inc., where he continued to work even though he had “retired” from trucking. His last trip was to Manitoba on October 10, just a little over a week before he fell ill.
Delbert was predeceased by his parents, Jack & Marea Zacharias; his brother, Murill Zacharias; his grandparents, John & Katharine Schultze and John R. & Anna Zacharias; and by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Delbert is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Zacharias; his children, Tamara (Andrew) Hackney, Stacey (Jimmy) Toews, and Michael (Kristin) Zacharias; his grandchildren, Brent (Renee) Hackney, Matthew (Jill) Hackney, Kelsey Benson, Sarah Benson, Breena Zacharias, and Elayna Zacharias; his great-grandchildren, Stephen and Maverick Hackney, and Chloe Hackney; and by his brothers and sister and their families.
The Funeral Service for Delbert Zacharias was held on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the Church of the Open Bible, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Jerred Andreas officiating. “How Great Thou Art” and “I’ll Fly Away” were sung by the congregation, with Teresa Blazosek serving as pianist. Special music was brought by Glen & Teresa Blazosek and Delbert’s grandchildren. The tribute was given by grandchildren, followed by a photo tribute. The Interment Service was held from the Waldeck Cemetery, Waldeck, SK with Chad Zacharias, Richard Hildebrand, Russell Hildebrand, Sheldon Frocklage, Stan Mullenix, and Les Weinbender serving as Pallbearers and Clinton Dyck as an Honorary Pallbearer.
In memory of Delbert Zacharias, donations made to the Swift Current SPCA and STARS Air Ambulance would be appreciated by the family.
