It is with heavy hearts the family of Ernest “Ernie” Corey, 78, announce his passing on Monday, November 5, 2018 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. Ernest “Ernie” Allen Corey was born in Swift Current, SK to Samuel & Ruth Corey on August 8, 1940. He attended school in Swift Current and Beverly. As a young man, he worked for the PFRA as a pasture rider.
From there, Ernie worked at various service stations in Swift Current as a mechanic until he was able to take over and operate Frontier Esso Service. This venture ended not long after, as the service station caught fire, destroying the business. He then relocated just down the road to operate the Texaco until it was closed. During these years he also spent considerable time working on his farm.
After doing mechanical work for several years, Ernie tried a new venture working for Meyers Oilfield Services. He missed the mechanical work he loved, so once again started his own business “Rodeo Auto Sales,” where he sold used vehicles as well as being the mechanic. Eventually, ill health forced Ernie to retire from this business. He continued farming with the help of his hard-working and reliable nephew, Jerome Corey, until the farm was sold in spring of 2018.
Ernie was a very hard worker his entire life and loved keeping up his yard to perfection. He also loved getting away with the family to the United States for short holidays. Going to rodeos, having family barbecues and special get-togethers were favorite times. Ernie had a real passion for vintage cars, especially his Crown Victoria.
Ernie was predeceased by his parents, Sam & Ruth Corey; his brother, Tom Corey; his sister, Dellice Hochlander; and by his parents-in-law, Alfred & Florence Mirau.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Rita Corey; his daughters, Debra Corey, Twila (Rob) Casselman, Kim Covey, and Tania (Steve) Zacharias; his grandchildren, Kyle Corey, Brandon (Sarah) Casselman, Lacey Casselman, Tyler Covey, Shane (Rachelle) Covey, Janelle Zacharias, and Travis Zacharias; his great-grandchildren, Axel, Harper, Riley, Aleaha, Kaysen, and Tyson; his brother, Rob Corey; his sisters, Elsie (Harold) Selanders and Lottie (Bob) Maalerud; and by many nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service for Ernie Corey was held on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 11:00 am from the Swift Current Funeral Home Chapel, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Rob Cochrane officiating. “His Eye is on the Sparrow” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” were sung by the congregation, with Barb Mirau serving as pianist. Special music was brought by Henry Banman, who sang “God of the Mountain” and “Stroll Through Heaven with You.” The eulogy and tributes were given by Max Mirau. The Interment Service was held from Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with Steve Zacharias, Travis Zacharias, Rob Casselman, Tyler Covey, Shane Covey, Brandon Casselman, Dawson Corey, and Max Mirau serving as Pallbearers. In memory of Ernie Corey, donations made to the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
