Eva Barabe, age 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 7, 2018 at the Meadows, Swift Current, SK. Eva was born October 30, 1929 to Peter & Elizabeth Janzen in Blumenhof, SK. She grew up with eleven siblings and completed her grade five education before she began helping on the farm. One of Eva’s fondest memories was helping her father change the tires on their IHC tractor from iron to rubber, which had to be pumped up by hand. Prior to her marriage Eva worked as a cook at the Swift Current Union Hospital for ten years. In 1968, Eva married Lawrence Olson. They lived in Swift Current and Eva helped raise his two young daughters. Lawrence passed away in 1975, and in 1983 Eva married Edmond Barabe, they lived in the Swift Current area until Edmond passed away in 2013. In 2014, Eva moved to Prairie Pioneer Manor, then the Swift Current Care Centre in 2016 until the Meadows was opened, where she resided until her passing. Eva was particularly fond of her dogs, who were her pride and joy. She was heartbroken when she had to give her furry friend away in 2013 when she moved into the city.
Eva was predeceased by her first husband, Lawrence Olson; her second husband, Edmond Barabe; and by her siblings, Agnes Dick, Mary Koethler, Peter Janzen, John Janzen, Elisabeth Peters, Anna Knelson, Henry Janzen, Ben Janzen, Gertrude Birkedal, and Helena Forde. Eva is survived by her step-children from both marriages, Susan Bayne, Sandra Pritchard, Betty Gray, Donald (Karen) Barabe, Danny (Ruth) Barabe, and John (Verna) Barabe; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister, Katherine Schmidt; and by her nieces and nephews. Eva’s family would like to recognize the caring and compassionate care she received at both the Swift Current Care Centre and the Meadows. Special thanks to her niece, Margaret Dick, for the frequent help and visits. Also, a sincere thank you to Dr. Sam Bakare and all the caring staff of House 22 and her fellow residents of House 22 who helped to brighten Eva’s days.
