Florabelle Sorensen

Florabelle Sorensen, age 105, of Kyle, SK, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 23, 2017 at the Kyle Health Care Centre. Florabelle Sadie Sorensen was born on November 17, 1912 to Albert & Sarah Reimche in the Hollonquist area, SK. Florabelle attended school in Hollonquist and Lodi, CA. She worked as a telephone operator at the local telephone exchange, later moving to Kyle, where she met her husband, Donald Sorensen. Donald & Florabelle were married on September 22, 1934 in Swift Current, SK. They farmed four miles south of Kyle — where they raised their daughter, Shirley — until the mid-seventies, when they retired to Kyle.

In 1946, they began spending winters in the Lodi and Los Angeles areas, where Florabelle had many relatives. Donald & Florabelle enjoyed boating and fishing during the summer months, especially in Northern Saskatchewan and at the Saskatchewan Landing. After retirement, they also took up golfing and camping, making many trips to the Outlook campground in their fifth wheel. In later years, they purchased a mobile home in Sarasota, Florida, where they spent twenty winters. Florabelle was able to live independently in the Kyle home she and Donald built together in the mid-seventies until she was 103, when she moved to the Health Care Centre in Kyle. Florabelle is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Lyle) Van Buskirk (Kyle, SK); her grandchildren, Darcy (Melissa) Van Buskirk (Kyle, SK), Lynn (Ken) O’Hara (Courtenay, BC); her three great-grandchildren, Dylan O’Hara (Vancouver, BC), Jamie O’Hara (Victoria, BC), and Connor O’Hara (Courtenay, BC); her siblings, Harvey Reimche (Swift Current, SK), Robert Reimche (Mission, BC), Hazel Wagner (Lethbridge, AB), and Lucille Bochek (Moose Jaw, SK); and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 73 years, Donald Sorensen, on October 12, 2007; her mother, Sarah Reimche (Hollonquist, SK) in 1923 when she was ten years old; her father and stepmother, Albert (Lodi, CA) & Anna Reimche (Swift Current, SK); her sisters, Lily Schwartz (Swift Current) and Luella Sartison (Swift Current); her two infant brothers (Hollonquist area); and by her five sisters-in-law and nine brothers-in-law.
