Gary Raymond Francis, age 76, of Herbert, SK left us on Thursday, November 14, 2019 with his family by his side at the Regina General Hospital.
Gary was born on August 12, 1943 in Herbert, SK to Raymond & Edith (Lansberry) Francis. Gary & Julia (Doerksen) were married in Herbert on October 3, 1964. When they were first married, Gary & Julia spent many years on the rodeo circuit, where they made many lifelong friends. He was an award-winning calf and team roper. Gary owned and operated Herbert Farm Equipment Ltd, selling farm equipment in the community. His next venture was wholesale and retail fertilizer based out of both Herbert and Riverhurst, where he expanded his friendships with ag producers and dealers.
Gary’s farming activities and business dealings never kept him from his love of fishing. He was a humble fisherman, but by those who knew him he was regarded as an expert guide. Gary loved to be on what he considered pristine Lane Diefenbaker with any friend, grandchild, or new acquaintance. In his later years he got back into livestock, taking great pride in his horses and grass-fed calves. Recently, he served as part of a SaskHealth committee on cancer awareness.
His loss leaves a hole in his family and the countryside north of Herbert, where he was a source of wisdom and companionship. Gary is survived by his wife of 55 years, Julia; his daughter, Raegan (Ward) Minifee (Herbert, SK) and her children, Storm Dafoe, Sheyenne Funk, and Tristin Funk; his son, G. Lane (Nicole) Francis (Swift Current, SK) and their children, Sierra, Shay, Seth, Sage, Stowe, and Sayer Francis; his three sisters, Marilyn Gusa, Joan (Graem) Dupont, and Debbie (Clint) Busse; his brother, F. Barry Brown; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
At Gary’s request, no formal funeral services will be held. A memorial service will be held in June 2020 at his farm north of Herbert for family, friends, and others whose lives Gary touched.
