June Schroeder Obituary

June Schroeder, age 86, passed away Monday, November 19, 2018, at the Cypress regional Hospital in Swift Current, SK. June had hoped to be buried in the spring when the flowers are in bloom.

Shirley “June” (Hopkins) Schroeder was born June 1, 1932 at White Fox, SK to Wesley & Iola (Ward) Hopkins, the fourth child of a family of eight. She attended Pinehurst rural school until Grade 8, and then attended high school in White Fox. After graduation, she attended Saskatoon Business College (SBC) and taught Pitman Shorthand and Bookkeeping for fourteen years.

It was at this time she met a lifelong friend, Gail Hopkins (no relation) and they starred in fastball and curling for many years. June also met another lifelong friend at SBC, Helene Schroeder, who became her mother-in-law in 1965 when June married Helene’s son, Arnold. This was the beginning of her ranch life in Elrose (Coteau View) area, where June & Arnold raised their children, Marion and Elmer, who enjoyed a close relationship with their Couture cousins in Saskatoon. June loved horses, 4-H, quilting, and gardening, with a special passion for flowers. They left the ranch in 1999, moving to the acreage in the Leinan district, where she continued to grow flowers and vegetables.

It was here that she started quilting with the Miracle Quilters as a fundraiser for the new Catholic Church in Swift Current. In 2013, they moved from the acreage to Swift Current. During her lifetime, June underwent cancer treatment three times, as well as suffering from arthritic conditions. Failing health ended her active life, bringing her home to her Lord on Wednesday, November 19, 2018.

June was predeceased by her parents, Wesley & Iola Hopkins; three brothers, Lorne, Bruce, and Howard; an infant sister; brother-in-law, Gordon Douglas; mother-in-law, Helene Schroeder; brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Gerry & Gay Couture.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Arnold Schroeder; daughter, Marion (Robert) Church; son, Elmer (Sharon) Schroeder; grandchildren, Brennan and Kellan Church, Aidan, Claire, Gabrielle, Kieran, Dominic, and Callum Schroeder; sister, Joan Douglas; brothers, Clifford (Doris) and Edward “Ted”; sister-in-law, Lillian Schroeder-McTighe; brother-in-law, Fr.
