Martha Zacharias

Martha Zacharias, age 87, of Herbert passed away peacefully with her children by her side on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at the Herbert Integrated Health Facility, Herbert, SK after a courageous battle with cancer. Martha Zacharias was born on September 26, 1935 to Peter & Maria Harder in Herbert. She grew up in the Gouldtown district and attended Big Coulee School.

On November 4, 1956 Martha married the love of her life, Harry Zacharias. Following their marriage, they went to work on a farm near Moose Jaw, SK and later they moved to a farm near Beaver Flat, SK where they welcomed their children — Yvonne and Lyle. Later, they moved to their own farm at Glen Kerr, SK in 1964.

Martha worked hard alongside Harry driving truck, baling, gardening, and milking cows. After Harry’s passing, Martha moved to Herbert where she lived in her home until her health declined and she moved to Prairie Wind Estate. She gradually adjusted to life in town and attended the Herbert Mennonite Brethren church, where she became very involved and made many good friends. Martha had a strong faith in the Lord, Harry’s sudden passing in 1994 was a shock but she persevered and is finally reunited with him.

Martha loved going for coffee most every day and enjoyed playing games and visiting. Martha had a wonderful, witty sense of humor and you always knew where you stood — she was a straight shooter and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. She was an avid reader and loved doing crosswords. Every week she made delicious buns and baking, for which she was well known.

Most of all, Martha loved spending time with her family, especially at Christmas and holidays. There were many camping trips and a family trip to Mexico. She was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Martha is survived by her children and their families, her daughter, Yvonne (David) Chess (Estevan, SK) and their children, Nicole (Dave) Lunn (Abby and Ellie) (Morden, MB), Landon (Kendra) Chess (Bella and Holden) (Lumsden, SK), and Clinton (Lexie) Chess (Brylee) (Estevan, SK); her son, Lyle Zacharias (Herbert, SK), daughter-in law, Kelly, and their children, Emily (Arek) Martul (Stony Plain, AB) and Graham (Holly Majaren) Zacharias (Saskatoon, SK); her sisters, Mary Funk, Tina Friesen, and Elma Harder; her brother, Dick (Fay) Harder; her sisters-in-law, Ruth (Albert) Robillard, Sarah Harder, Martha Radiuk, and Nettie Zacharias; and by many nieces and nephews.

Martha was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Harry Zacharias; her parents, Peter & Maria Harder; her sister, Laura Harder; her brothers, Henry, Abe, Benjamin, and Pete; and by her parents-in-law.

The Funeral Service for Martha Zacharias was held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2:00 pm from the Swift Current Funeral Home Chapel, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Dave Lunn officiating. “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “Old Rugged Cross” were sung by the congregation under the leadership of Donovan Epp. The obituary was read by Graham Zacharias. A photo tribute was given by Clinton Chess. "He Knows My Name" was sung by Donovan Epp as special music.

The Private Interment Service was held prior to the Funeral Service from the Capeland Cemetery, Main Centre, SK with Landon Chess, Nicole Lunn, Clinton Chess, Emily Martul, Graham Zacharias, and Arek Martul serving as Pallbearers.
