Marilyn.  I was just at a 50th Wedding Anniversary for Linda Barker former OCA President and heard the sad news.  I had the pleasure of working with Neil during some trying times for Canadian Cattlemen.  He was very knowledgeable and always up to date on what the industry was thinking and needed.  For a boy from south-western Ontario he taught me a lot of what farming was like in Western Canada.  He was instrumental in getting funding for the west during the BSE crisis at a time when there wasn't a lot of money to go around.  He had the respect and confidence of the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin and the Government of Canada of the day which helped greatly. He taught me a lot and was always respectful of my positon and I will always remember him for that.  Hon. Bob Speller

Marilyn..... I just heard about Neil.... I am so very sorry for your loss. One of the highlights of my time selling and servicing cattle oilers was being able to stop in to visit with you and Neil at your ranch.... Coffee was always on and an opinion was always heard. You both were so hospitable.... The Cattle Industry has lost one of the last real Cowboys....

We just heard about Neil's passing.  Marilyn, Shane, JJ and family I will never forget meeting Neil for the first time at Agribition and how joked with me and I realized how much Shane was like his father.  You all welcomed me to the annual Branding and it was one of my most memorable days and when Neil came and said "come one you are coming with us to bring in the other herd" I felt so special! Treasure all the memories and please know our thoughts are with you all.    Randy & Leanne Smith

Marilyn and family,
I remember Neil with laughter he was one of a kind for sure, a great sense of humour and an opinion on everything, which he did not mind sharing, whether you wanted to hear it or not. He did so much for his community and the entire cattle industry. My sympathy to all of you. If the truth is that its not how long you live but what you leave behind, then he will always be with each and every one of us, because he did so much for everyone there is a wealth of good works that he left behind.

Shane and JJ,  You are both unforgettable characters, and when  I met your father a couple times at Agribition, that explained a lot about why.  He was instantly engaging, witty, and entertaining.  He told me about the rodeo horse that the cowboys couldn't ride for 8 seconds of bucking, that he used as a saddle horse at home, funny stuff.  He also explained more in ten minutes about the true challenges of the beef industry than I learned from anyone else, he truly understood how big picture politics impacted things on the local farm.  It's always a shame to see such wisdom and contribution  go so young, but another way to look at it, we all have a short time here, and your father did more with the time he was given than most do.

I was truly shocked when first heard of Neil's passing; he just seemed like he would be around forever. He was one of the real characters in the cattle business of whom there was no doubt on where he stood on any issue. I was lucky enough to have been a part of CCA and CBEF with Neil and never doubted his committment to the industry. It was an honour to have known and worked with Neil and he will be truly missed. My condolences to Marylin, Shane & JJ.

We were shocked and saddened to hear of Neal,s passing. Neal was a good friend and we always enjoyed a visit or phone call . Neal and I spent a lot of time, traveled a lot of miles over the years ,working in the interests of the Canadian Cattle Industry. Neal was a strong believer that a lot less Government intervention in the industry was needed. A good philosophy in my opinion. We will always remember many Cattle discussions over a glass of Scotch & Amaretto. Neal will be missed by all who knew him. Our hearts go out to Marilyn, Shane, J.J. and their families in this most difficult time.

Marilyn, Shane, JJ and your families, I wish that somehow your loss and great pain could be lessened.  I only hope that it helps to know how this strikes us all through our hearts.  I loved Neil''s great humour, but I also idolised him and all that he did for our industry.  His straight forward candour and pragmatism in the face of all of the BSE trials could have been handled no better.  His dedication to the beef industry inspired me but I also treasured the laughter and friendship we shared.  I am blessed and honoured to have known him and will always carry his memory.  My love and sympathy, Heather
