Ragnhild Cory, age 102, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at the Meadows, Swift Current, SK.
Ragnhild Laura Cory was born July 28, 1917 at Bergheim, Hallingdal, Norway to Ivar & Brynhild Tarum. Ragnhild was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. One of nine children — four girls and five boys — Ragnhild took her schooling in Norway. With the second World War looming, blonde haired and blue eyed Ragnhild came to Canada in the fall of 1936 on a visitor’s visa and stayed with her sister, Ingebjorg Mjolid in Leinan, SK. She was advised to stay longer and worked for her sister until the fall of 1945, when she married Albert Nordsveen. Albert had also come from Norway and settled north of Leinan on the farm he had built. This is where they lived for most of their married life, and it was generally a happy time.
In the spring of 1948, they lost a daughter in infancy. Their son, Ronald, joined the family in 1953 when he was five years old. Ragnhild & Albert lived on the farm until 1969, when they sold the farm and moved into Swift Current. Sadly, their family time together was cut short when Albert passed away in 1978. After that, Ragnhild kept busy with her church and community activities. In 1981, Ragnhild & Oliver Cory were married. She joined him on Allan drive, where they lived until Oliver’s passing in 1986.
Family was very important to Ragnhild. Her son, Ron, married Pat Dahl in 1975 and the family grew by two grandsons, Christopher and David. A great-granddaughter, Ava, joined the family and she held an incredibly special place in Ragnhild’s heart. Seven of Ragnhild’s siblings remained in Norway, and she went back three times to visit friends and family.
In her wishes and memories book, Ragnhild wrote, “I have had a good life in Canada and thank God for leading me here. He has been with me in good days and not so good days. I would also like to thank all my friends and relatives for all the goodness they have heaped on me. Especially Clinton and Clive, for accepting me so completely. And so now, may God bless everyone.”
Ragnhild is survived by her daughter-in-law, Pat Nordsveen (Swift Current); her two step-sons, Clinton (Sylvia) Cory (Saskatoon) and Clive Cory (Saskatoon); her six grandchildren, Chris Nordsveen (Calgary) and David Nordsveen (Ottawa), Bruce Cory, Neil Cory, Kim Cory, and Lance Cory (all of Saskatoon); her great-granddaughter, Ava Nordsveen; her sister-in-law, Glenna Cory (Swift Current); and by many nieces and nephews in Canada and Norway.
Ragnhild was predeceased by her first husband, Albert Nordsveen; her second husband, Oliver Cory; and by her son, Ron Nordsveen, exactly one year to the day.
The Funeral Service for Ragnhild Cory was held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 2:00 pm from St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Linda Hall officiating. “Crown Him with Many Crowns,” “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” and “To God Be the Glory” were sung by the congregation, with Elaine Serfas serving as pianist. Isaiah 61:1-3, Psalm 23, and Matthew 11:28-30 were read. Tributes were given by Chris Nordsveen and David Nordsveen. The ushers in the church were Allen & Isabella Sundby.
The Private Family Interment Service was held prior to the Funeral Service from Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with Ragnhild’s family serving as Pallbearers.
