On June 8, 2019, Sarah (Ens) Friesen, 90 years young, passed from this world to the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Sarah was born to Peter & Margaret Ens on November 13, 1928, also her mother’s birthday, in Blumenhof, SK — the third of eight children. She grew up in the village of Blumenhof and had her schooling there. As a teen, she loved to play ball and other sports.
Sarah made her decision to invite Jesus Christ into her heart under the ministry of Rev. Werner Zacharias, the pastor in Blumenhof at the time.
Peter J. Friesen, a young man from Schoenfeld, caught her eye when she was 17, and they dated for about three years. Peter and Sarah married on June 5, 1949 and reached the amazing milestone of 70 years of marriage, three days before her passing.
Sarah & Peter farmed together for twenty-one years in the Bigford district. She worked as hard as any man on the farm while raising their six children. They moved to Swift Current in 1968 so their children could attend school without riding the bus for hours every day. They farmed from the city for another three years and then decided to open a furniture store in the fall of 1971. Peter and his brother, Isaac, operated the store together until February 1984, when Peter retired. While Peter worked at the furniture store, Sarah volunteered one day a week at the MCC store, where she worked for thirty years, retiring shortly before her 90th birthday.
Sarah & Peter joined the Gideons in 1984 and remained members of that organization. They enjoyed getting Bibles into the hands of people who had never been able to own one.
After retirement, they did a lot of travelling all over Canada, the United States, and abroad. They especially enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Israel and Egypt.
Family was always extremely important to Sarah, and she enjoyed hosting family gatherings for every occasion. All 74 members of her family always received cards for their birthdays and anniversaries as well as Christmas cards.
Sarah is survived by her loving husband, Peter; their children, Dorothy (Arnold) Andres, Bob (Louise) Friesen, Ron (Kathy) Friesen, Wes (Pat) Friesen, Deb (Dick) Klassen, and Harold (Theressa) Friesen; her 15 grandchildren; her 34 great-grandchildren; her great-great-grandchild; her sisters, Susie Zacharias and Annie Friesen; her brothers, Jake (Sylvia) and Jim Ens; her sisters-in-law, Kathleen Ens and Irene (predeceased by John) Ens; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Sarah was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Frank, John, and Dave Ens; her brothers-in-law, Frank Zacharias and Abe Friesen; her sister-in law, Irene (survived by Jim) Ens, and by her grandson, Deepak Budhrani.
The family of Sarah Friesen would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and staff of Cypress Regional Hospital and Clover House, with a special thanks to Dr. de Klerk.
The Funeral Service for Sarah Friesen was held on Friday, June 14, 2019 at 1:30 pm from Trailview Alliance Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Mike Smart and Pastor Bryon Bezanson officiating. “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “ Praise Him, Praise Him” were sung by the congregation, with Marilyn Ginther serving as pianist. Special music was brought by Karan Regier. The obituary was read by Ron Friesen. Tributes were given by Sarah’s children and grandchildren. A photo presentation was given by Matt Rousseaux. The ushers in the church were Jack Chalmers, Phil Henderson, Dwayne Klassen, and Harvey Lomax.
The Private Family Interment Service was held following the Funeral Service at Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with Sarah’s children, Dorothy Andres, Bob Friesen, Ron Friesen, Wes Friesen, Deb Klassen, and Harold Friesen serving as Pallbearers and the local Gideon’s chapter serving as Honorary Pallbearers.
