Abram “Abe” J. Friesen passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at the age of 87 at Herbert Integrated Health Facility, Herbert, SK.
Abe was born on June 20, 1936 to Jacob J.M. & Margaret Friesen – the oldest of 10 children. Abe attended school in Rhineland, SK and met Helen Joan Wiebe in his late teens at a church event. They were married on August 31, 1957 and were blessed with 4 children.
Abe & Helen raised their family in Herbert where he was active in many organizations including Herbert Lions Club (lifetime member), town council, Herbert Fire brigade, Emergency Measure Organization, and Herbert Rodeo Association. Community was important to Abe – he gladly volunteered many years to umping ball games. Abe took pride in watching his children participate in sports.
Abe worked for Voth Plumbing & Heating: Ltd before starting his own business, Herbert Trenching Plumbing & Heating, which he ran for 50 years. His knowledge and generosity were well known and appreciated by all who knew him. Music was a vital part of Abe’s life-he played in several musical groups and in his later years played guitar regularly in church with friends.
Abe was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Helen Joan Friesen; parents, Jacob & Margaret Friesen; brothers, Les Friesen and Allan Friesen; sister, MaryAnn Voth; sisters-in-law, Betty Belter, Agnes Friesen, and Gail Friesen; and by brothers-in-law, Clifford Belter, Peter Wiebe, and Hank Wiebe.
He is survived by his children, Sherry (Elmer) Gerbrandt, Dwayne Friesen, Richard (Joanne) Friesen, and MaryAnn (Richard) Stephenson; grandchildren, Angie Jackson, Jamie Gerbrandt, Melissa Stephenson, Jordan Stephenson, Kevin Friesen, Kristyn Friesen, and Lauren Friesen; great-grandchildren, Wyatt and April, Seth and Mackenna and Tyson; and by his siblings Tina (John) Wall, Menno (Naomi) Friesen, Ernie Friesen, Linda Krahn, John (Bonnie) Friesen, and Leroy (Brenda) Friesen.
At Abe’s request, a Private Family Service was held on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Swift Current Funeral Home Chapel with Donovan Epp officiating. A tribute was given by Angie Jackson on behalf of the family. The service card is available to view below.
The Private Internment Service was held at the Herbert Cemetery with Angie Jackson, Jamie Gerbrandt, Melissa Stephenson, Jordan Stephenson, Kevin Friesen, Kristyn Friesen, Lauren Friesen, and Cody Hartness serving as Pallbearers.
The luncheon was held at Herbert Lions Hall.
