Alvin Schapansky, our dad, age 96, was received into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current, SK.
Our precious dad was born on September 25, 1929 north of Morse, SK to Peter and Elizabeth Schapansky, the oldest of eight siblings. He attended public school in Log Valley just north of Glen Kerr, SK. After completing grade six, dad attained farm employment in order to help with the financial needs of the family. He continued this line of work until the age of 25, when he married the love of his life, Alma Dueck in 1955 and they began their life together as husband and wife. They lived in an old house on some land that dad rented in the Log Valley area. In time, they would need to move to Herbert where dad acquired full-time employment from Vic Schwean delivering crude oil. However, the nature of truck driving demanded undesired lengthy hours that kept him away from home, especially with a little son (Ken) now on the scene. Dad would acquire better suited employment as a mechanic at Miller Motors in Herbert. It wouldn’t be long until another addition came to the family, a baby girl (Brenda).
In 1959, dad and mom purchased the Harry Pinch farm situated near Calderbank, SK. Our parents saw the need for the children to attend Sunday School and began attending the Mennonite Conference Church, in Gouldtown, SK. It wouldn’t be long until both dad and mom would receive assurance of salvation that only comes through Jesus Christ. Both of them repented of their sin and accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour, and Lord. Together, they became devout followers of Christ and became significant examples to their children as they lived their faith on a daily basis. It wouldn’t be long until the family expanded one more time as another son (Ryan) was born in 1968. Dad farmed side by side with his wife, Alma, for 32 years. They also joined the ministry of the Gideon’s during this time (1979). Retirement came in 1990 and the farm would be sold in order to purchase a house in Herbert. Dad would have a shop built in order to facilitate his very highly skilled self-taught machining ability. He had a passion for building scale model steam engines and threshing machines. He also used his skill to serve the community as a local machinist to fix, replace, and fabricate various kinds of mechanical parts. As health issues began its process to slow things down, dad and mom downsized. They sold the house and in 2014 they moved into a rental house for the next ten years. Because of advancing health issues they moved into the Prairie Wind Estates on April 10, 2024 where dad resided until his passing.
Dad leaves to cherish his memory to our mom, Alma; his children, Ken Schapansky, Brenda Cartman, and Ryan (Melanie) Schapansky; his grandchildren, Roberta Mansfield, Sheradyn Cartman, Kayli McLellan (Quinn), and Coltyn Schapansky; 12 great-grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Cecil (Shirley), Harvey (Glenis), and Stanley (Myrna); a brother-in-law, Elvin Block; a sister-in-law, Louella (Derrick) Henry; and many nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by a son-in-law, Trevor Regier; 2 brothers, Wes, and Dan; 2 sisters, Eva Dyck, and Viola Block; and by sister-in-law & husband, Elsie & Jerry Shygera.
