Anna Dyck Obituary

Anna Dyck, age 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at Willow Creek Manor, Swift Current, SK.

Anna was born September 2, 1927 to John & Elizabeth Giesbrecht in Chortitz, SK — the third of five children, and the only girl, in the middle of four brothers. She grew up in Chortitz and attended the Versailles School, just over the hill from the family farm, where she received her grade eight education. Anna got her first paying job at the age of 16, helping with chores and housekeeping for local farm families. She attended Sunday School and church while growing up and at the age of 18, was confirmed and baptized upon confession of her faith. When she was 20, she began working at the Swift Current Union Hospital.

On November 20, 1949 Anna married Frank Dyck at the Schoenfeld Sommerfeld Church, Schoenfeld, SK and they settled in Swift Current. After getting married, Anna joined the Stone Croft Bible study group, where her faith was continually strengthened. She continued to work at the hospital for twelve years, during which time, Anna & Frank also had four boys — Wayne, Pete, Dave, and Henry. After leaving the hospital, she cooked at the Healy Hotel for her brother and sister-in-law, Pete & Irene, and also cooked at the bus depot for several years before going to work at the Palliser Regional Care Centre.

Anna then had their daughter, Angela, and stayed at home until Angie began kindergarten. She then worked for the provincial government, cleaning office buildings, for fifteen years until she retired in 1989. Frank retired in 1990 and began to have health problems in 2002. Anna cared for Frank as best she could until he became too ill and had to move to the Palliser Long Term Care Centre, where he lived until his passing on June 13, 2011.

Throughout her life, she continued to attend Bible study and enjoyed attending church to worship and fellowship. Hymn singing held a special place in her heart. Anna loved being with people and doing things for others, she wanted them to know that she cared for them. She joined the Curves gym and enjoyed the classes and many friendships she made there, going for coffee and coming to love the ladies she met as if they were family.

Anna & Frank loved to do things together and she especially loved to have her family around her. Family was incredibly important to Anna and she spent hours praying for her family. In addition to prayer, she also took great pleasure in making everyone’s favorite dish and dessert when they got together. Their cat, Perkins, was also very special to her.

In her memorial notes, Anna was incredibly candid as she looked back on her life, which is a testimony to her faith and who she was as a person. She admitted to road bumps in her faith journey but didn’t make excuses and never gave up — these struggles brought her closer to God. Anna did the best she could and will be remembered by her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.

Anna leaves to cherish her memory her children, Pete Dyck, Dave (Tina) Dyck, Henry (Janice) Dyck, and Angela Steele; her fifteen grandchildren; her twenty great-grandchildren; her great-great-grandchild; her brothers, John Giesbrecht and Dave (Kaye) Giesbrecht; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Anna was predeceased by her husband, Frank Dyck; her son, Wayne Dyck; her daughter-in-law, Cindy Dyck; her parents, John & Elizabeth Giesbrecht; her brothers, Pete (Irene) Giesbrecht and Abe (Val) Giesbrecht; her parents-in-law, Peter & Katherine Dyck; and by her sister-in-law, Kaye Giesbrecht.
