Anne Friesen Obituary

Anne Friesen (Dyck), age 89, passed away in the early morning of October 28, 2020 at the Meadows, Swift Current, SK. Anne was born on December 1, 1930 in Schantzenfeld, SK to Jacob W. & Elizabeth (Olfert) Dyck and was the eldest of six girls. She attended Bowmore School in the Lizard Lake School District near Cando, SK. Anne enjoyed learning but wasn’t able to complete elementary school since she was needed to work on the farm. She was a keen learner who read every book she could obtain from her school library, taught herself how to read German and later successfully passed the Saskatchewan General Education Diploma (GED) in 1981. Anne was an example to her children of perseverance, hard work, determination and personal strength working full-time on the farm and in her occupation. She worked as a waitress, in the kitchen at the Union Hospital, and later in the laundry. Anne did day work in several households until returning to work in the laundry at the Palliser Hospital where she worked for 15 years before retiring. Anne married Corny Friesen on July 3, 1949, a very dusty, dry day in Schoenfeld, SK and together they shared 68 wedding anniversaries. They had two daughters, Sandy and Cindy. Family was a very important part of her life. As a family they enjoyed many vacation trips to Meadow Lake Provincial Park for camping, fishing, swimming, and boating. Anne had several hobbies before and after retirement including walking, sewing, artistic painting, sketching, reading, and crosswords. She sewed multiple quilts for every member of the family, as well as suits and outfits. Anne created many beautiful paintings and drawings that filled her walls and those of her children. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed working in the yard both on the farm and in the city, which included trimming hedges, cutting grass, painting buildings, and fences. Anne & Corny moved into Swift Current from the farm in 2002 when Corny’s health began to fail. When he was admitted to the Meadows, Anne spent every day there helping to care for him. She is survived by her daughters, Stephanie “Sandy” John (Fehr) of Wymark, SK, Cynthia “Cindy” Philip (Ashurst) Friesen-Ford Ashurst of Ladysmith, BC; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Darcy) Prychak of Buchanan, SK, Blaine (Amber) Fehr of Swift Current, SK, and Meagan (Trevor Lickley) of Winnipeg, MB; her great-grandchildren, Noah, Joshua, Tessa, and Jacob Prychak, and Brielle and Olivia Fehr; her sisters, Mary (Harry) Zacharias, Margaret Dyck, Tina Carey, and Sarah (Blair) West; and by many nieces and nephews and her good friend, Joyce Oakman. Anne was predeceased by her husband, Corny, in 2017; her parents, Jacob W. & Elizabeth Dyck; her parents-in-law, Peter M. & Anna Friesen; her sister, Betty; her brothers-in-law, Jake and Peter Dyck; and by many aunts and uncles. The Funeral Service for Anne Friesen was held on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at 2:00 pm from the Community Baptist Church, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Joell Haugan officiating. The Private Family Interment Service was held from the Schantzenfeld Cemetery, Schantzenfeld, SK with John Fehr, Blaine Fehr, Jennifer Prychak, Darcy Prychak, Noah Prychak, and Ken Giesbrecht serving as Pallbearers. The Honorary Pallbearers were Ron & Yvonne Dyck, and Anne’s sisters, Margaret Dyck, Mary Zacharias, Tina Carey, and Sara West.
