Arnold Ernest Schroeder, age 89, passed away Monday, January 27, 2020 at the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Alberta.
Arnold was born on July 10, 1930, in Milden, Saskatchewan, to Elmer & Helene (nee Mourre) Schroeder. He was the eldest of four children. He attended Hester School until he took over the family farm with Helene at the time of his father’s passing in 1942. He continued to farm and ranch after Helene retired to Saskatoon.
At that time, he met June Hopkins and they were married in Saskatoon on October 9, 1965. They built their lives together in the Elrose/Coteau View community and enjoyed many long-lasting friendships. They welcomed two children, Marion, in 1971, and Elmer, in 1973.
The E - Ranch became a hub of extended family gatherings particularly with the Couture nieces & nephews, involving roundups, singsongs and pit barbeques. Arnold & June retired to an acreage near Stewart Valley in 1999, and later moved to Swift Current in 2013. In December 2019, Arnold moved to Calgary, Alberta, to be closer to his children and their families.
Music was an integral part of Arnold’s life. Many hours were spent with The Happy Wanderers, playing music for old time dances and seniors’ homes. Even after retiring to the acreage at Stewart Valley, and later to Swift Current, Arnold continued to provide musical entertainment with new friends.
Arnold has always been a devout Roman Catholic, volunteering much time and effort to St. Anthony’s in Forgan & Christ the Redeemer in Swift Current.
Arnold was predeceased by his wife, June, in November 2018; his parents, Elmer & Helene Schroeder; and by his sister & brother-in-law Gay & Gerry Couture.
Arnold is survived by his daughter, Marion (Robert) Church; his son, Elmer (Sharon) Schroeder; his grandchildren, Aidan, Claire, Gabrielle, Kieran, Dominic, and Callum Schroeder, and Brennan and Kellan Church; his sister, Lillian (Tom) Schroeder-McTighe; his brother, Fr. Maurice Schroeder OMI; and by the Couture family.
