Barb Hughes

We are deeply saddened to announce Barbara "Barb" Lea Hughes (Thoreson) of Abbey, SK passed away on Saturday May 15, 2021, her husband of 46 years by her side.

Barb is survived by her husband, Glenn Hughes, of Abbey, SK; her children, Scott (Lori) Hughes of Abbey, SK and Diane (Michael) Gergely of Medicine Hat, AB; and six grandchildren, Jacey, Austin, Kayla, Ethan, Emily, and Adam.

Barb was born July 30, 1955 in Cabri, SK, the second youngest of six children. In 1972, she met Glenn and they were married July 20, 1974. Barb spent the early years of the marriage on the family farm near Abbey raising their two children, Scott and Diane. Once both kids were in school Barb rejoined the workforce.

Many years were spent first working in Swift Current at OK Economy, then Zellers, before she made the decision to head back to school at Medicine Hat College. From there, Barb gained the skillset to take on a sales and marketing role at UFR, eventually moving to live part-time in Ontario working as Director of Sales & Marketing for Emery International. Barb's position at Emery Int. provided her with the opportunity to travel and see the world. Travelling and meeting new people was something she enjoyed immensely but her heart was back home on the farm.

For the past ten years, Barb has worked alongside Glenn and Scott, helping grow the family farm to what it is today. When Barb wasn't single-handedly caring for the cattle around the barn or fixing miles upon miles of fence line she would enjoy taking holidays to Banff. She also had talent for designing and making crocheted toques, headbands, and blankets.

Barb was an incredibly strong and independent person who would do anything for her family, especially her six grandchildren. She was always so proud to talk about them and show off a picture or two. 

The family will be having a Private Celebration of Life.
