Barry Aldag, age 79, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 24, 2024 at Willow Creek Manor, Swift Current, SK with his children by his side.
Ernest Barry Aldag was born on November 8, 1945, in Gull Lake, SK, the oldest child of Louis & Alice Aldag. Barry grew up on the family farm in the Aldag School District with his parents and three siblings. He loved everything about the farm, running through the hills, his horse, the other farm animals, card games, and gatherings with all the extended family and friends in the area. Barry was an amazing athlete who particularly enjoyed hockey, baseball, and football, but he was good at all sports. His talent for football was noticed early on while playing for his high school team, the Gull Lake Lions. He moved on to play with the Regina Rams, where he was named an all-star guard from 1964-1966, and capping off his junior football career with a championship win in 1966. From there, Barry joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders, playing with them from 1967-1971. Barry was a Roughrider through and through, often reminiscing about his playing days. He passed on his love of the Riders, first to his brother Roger, and then to his children and grandchildren.
Barry met Patricia Graves of Shaunavon, and they were married on December 1, 1970. They were married for 53 years and had 3 children together. Barry & Pat resided in Shaunavon SK where they worked and raised their children. After retiring from football, Barry had a long career in the oil industry, starting off as a contractor alongside his father, Louis. He retired from the oilfield at age 60 and spent his retirement years pursuing his lifelong love of exercising and enjoying time with his grandchildren.
Barry was a hard-working man who loved his family above all. He was big in stature and came by the nickname “Rammer” honestly, with a knack for breaking many things he touched since even he did not realize just how strong he was. Not only did he have the strength of a giant, but he also had the heart of a giant. His loss is felt deeply by all his family. We take solace knowing he is free to run the hills and country roads again as he always loved to do. If the Leafs ever win a cup, we will all be sure to raise a toast to him.
Barry was predeceased by his wife, Patricia; his parents, Louis & Alice Aldag; his sister, Doreen Chadney; his in-laws, Fred & Mary Graves; as well as by several special aunts, uncles and cousins. Barry will be dearly missed by his daughter, Tammy Arendt of Shaunavon – her children, Kelsey and Grayson: his daughter, Shonda (Blaine) Stevenson of Shaunavon – their daughter, Mackenzie (Talon) of Saskatoon: his son, Devon (Megan) of Saskatoon – their children, Olive and Elliot; his sister, Linda (Leo) Gudmundson of Coaldale, AB; his brother, Roger (Joanne) Aldag of Regina Beach; his brother-in-law, Don Chadney of Castlegar, BC; as well as by their families, and numerous other relatives and friends.
A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Shaunavon, SK. with Pastor Logan Klassen Officiating.
