Barry Janzen, age 54, passed away Monday, July 5, 2021 with his brother at his side at the Meadows, Swift Current, SK.
Barry George Janzen was born October 4, 1966 in Swift Current to Isaac & Eva Janzen and grew up farming with his family in the area. He went to school first in Rosenhof, SK — a rural school covering grades K - 8 — in three, then later, two classrooms. Barry attended Beatty Collegiate for grade nine, and the Comprehensive High School for grades ten through twelve — where commercial cooking class very soon became his primary interest.
Throughout his life, Barry enjoyed cooking, camping, hiking, music, and photography. He worked as a chef and surveyor for most of his career — first in Swift Current, then later in and around Kelowna BC. He took the greatest pride in his culinary work, often treating people to new dishes. He always had cookbooks and cooking magazines around, and his TV was most often tuned to the food network.
Barry tended towards a quiet life, the times he enjoyed the most were usually over coffee with one or two friends. He dealt with various health struggles through much of his life, his final battle being with several forms of cancer. During this time, he endured the pain well and was always cheerful when friends and family came to visit.
His final few months were spent in the Meadows, where he often told visiting family members how much he appreciated the staff and the care he received.
Barry was predeceased by his parents, Isaac & Eva Janzen. Barry is survived by his siblings, Jim (Makiko), Judy, Ken (Marcia), Gordon, and Melvin (Rose); and by his nieces, nephews, and their families.
In memory of Barry Janzen and for those wishing to do so, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
A Private Family Service will be held at a later date.
