William Crossley Wainman, age 94, of Swift Current, SK and formerly of Pambrun, SK passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the morning of Sunday, June 4, 2023 from Cypress House, Swift Current.
Bill, as he was known and greeted by all who know him – friends and family alike – was born December 16, 1928 in Vanguard, SK – the eldest of four children born to Ben & Mabel Wainman. He received his education in Pambrun and was in the last grade twelve graduating class before the high school division was moved to Vanguard. After graduation, he entered the St. Andrew's College in Saskatoon, SK. Pres Res, as it was affectionately known by those students who were in training for the ministry, was a short-lived home for Bill as studies didn’t agree with him, but his friendships there did, and he maintained contact with more than one throughout the intervening years.
It was also while he was in Saskatoon that he met the love of his life, Lillian Loewen. They were married shortly after in June of 1951. Their tenure in Saskatoon was short however, as the call to farming was too great for Bill. Shortly after getting married, they moved to Outram, SK in 1953 to begin their farming life.
In 1962, they moved back to Pambrun to take over the family farm following the retirement of his parents. Pambrun was home and it was there that they began to raise their two sons and daughter. They supplemented wheat farming with an egg business in the early years and cattle eventually replaced the chickens and egg business, all the while maintaining grain operations.
Bill was always involved in the community in some way or other. He and Lil curled in the winter in the early years. He was elected to municipal council for Whiska Creek on more than one occasion and was deputy reeve at one time. He and Lil were also involved with Gideons International, now known as ShareWord International. Bill also enjoyed trips to Florida, the UK, Hawaii, cruising to Alaska, and numerous car trips around North America to visit family and friends. But his pastime over the years, both on the farm and into retirement, was sitting in his easy chair and reading the Western Producer — which he faithfully read in its entirety every week.
Bill & Lil moved into Swift Current in 2000 but continued to spend seeding and harvest seasons at the farm for many years. They were married for 68 ½ years until Lil’s passing in 2020. There were many ups and downs in life, but his faith in God remained strong to the end.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Brenda (Carl) Linkletter; his sons, Lowell Wainman and Blair Wainman; his grandchildren, Nicole (Dave), Michael (Stacy), and Richard (Elizabeth); and by his great-grandchildren, Juan, Olivia, Noah, and Eliana.
Our grateful thanks to the staff at the Bentley and Cypress House for their loving care for Dad and our family throughout his final days.
The Funeral Service for Bill Wainman was held on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 2:30 pm from Millar College of the Bible, Pambrun, SK with Marvin Allan officiating. “My Jesus, I Love Thee” and “Sweeter as the Days Go By” were sung by the congregation under the leadership of Lorn Gieck. Psalm 91 was recited by Juan Wainman. Special music was “My Redeemer.” The eulogy was given by Richard Wainman. The tribute was given by Blair Wainman. The poem “Close the Gate” was read by Nicole Buhler. The ushers in the dining hall were Rodney Gamble and Rene Seemel.
