Corney Wiebe Obituary

Corney Wiebe, age 97, of Gouldtown passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2020 at the Herbert & District Integrated Healthcare Facility, Herbert, SK with his wife and children by his side and other loved ones outside his window.

Corney is survived by his wife, Lena; his children and their families, Don (Cora) Gerlach, their children, Melissa and Angela (Dustin); Shirley (John) Doerksen, their children, John C, Elizabeth, and David; Connie (Phillip) Wiebe, their children, Shaun and Shelley (Leszek); Linda (Randal) Fast, their children, Jamie (Kent), Amanda, and Nathan (Kim); Janet (Roy) Hildebrand, their children, Stephanie (Coe), Chantal (Riley), and Dane; Marion (Brent) Wiebe; their children, Natasha, Joshua (Jordan), and Zachary; and by his great-grandchildren.

Corney was predeceased by an infant son on April 27, 1967; his parents, Cornelius & Mary (Reimer) Wiebe; his brother, Erwin; and by his sisters, Margaret, Agnes, Audrey, and Mary.

Corney married Helen Hildebrand on November 7,1952. Dad’s life was the farm. Even after he rented his land out, he and mom spent hours on the field, sitting in the truck, watching the harvesting. When things got a little bit harder for him, he would drive to the bin on the quad or garden tractor to watch the grain being unloaded. Dad loved to drive to town for coffee, but not stay too long — he never wanted to live there.

Years ago, he spent lots of time on the phone and if we didn’t answer they would drive over and check on you. Faspa was at 10:00 and again at 3:00. Having a medaschlope was only for lazy people. He loved to sing and yodel and joke around with people.

Dad worked at various jobs, He worked at the POW camp in Banff during the winter of 1941-1942. At the age of 18 he worked for John Deere in Herbert and on a road construction crew.

Corney’s grandkids meant the world to him. He spent hours worrying about them if the weather was bad — before he went to bed he needed to know that they had arrived at their destination and they were safe.

Dad was admitted to the Shaunavon nursing home November 26, 2018 and transferred to Herbert December 5, 2018. He never complained and was always telling us how kind the staff were. He would often sit by the front window and wait for his brother, Edwin’s, truck to roll up and visit him.

After a major decline in health on May 24, 2020 dad passed away July 26, 2020. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, his children, his sixteen grandchildren, and his sixteen great-grandchildren.
