David Banks, loving husband to Cheryl, completed his earthly journey on March 14, 2026 in Swift Current, SK, at the age of 89 years.
David (Dave) was born on January 16,1937 in Tuberose, SK to parents Thomas (Tom) A. and Ruth F. Banks. He took his education at Leyton and finished school in Kyle.
Beaver Lumber in Nipawin was his first job.
Dave married Doreen Brown in October 1959. They worked in Kindersley and Elrose before moving to the home quarter south of Kyle in 1966 to farm. Sadly, Doreen passed away in mid-1983.
Cheryl and Dave met in October 1983. They attended seven fowl suppers while getting to know each other. Fortunately, both avoided growing wings. It was during this time that Cheryl learned what a constant tease Dave was. They were married on October 20, 1984 in Kyle United Church, just after a three-day snowstorm.
Dave enjoyed travelling if he did not have to plan, organize, pack, read maps or drive. Places visited include the Maritimes, Mexico, Vancouver Island, southwest USA, Grand Cayman, Bali, and Singapore. Ocean and river cruises were also taken. His one trip to England was to visit the Andover area where his father had lived before coming to Canada.
For 62 years, Dave has been a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, initiated in Elrose Lodge in 1964. Dave also became a member of the Red and Blue Lodges, the Preceptory and the Shrine. He was proud to have been a Director for Crime Stoppers Saskatchewan for the first five years of its development.
In his youth, Dave was a driven baseball player. He was a well-known left-handed pitcher, who confounded many a batter. He curled, coached hockey, and coached ladies’ baseball, which he said was his favourite.
Dave golfed regularly with John and their friends. He also went to several golf tournaments over the summers.
The 20-acre yard was always being populated with more trees. Dave loved nature. He planted fruit and berry trees for our use, but most went to birds and grazing animals, as planned. Dave also enjoyed cultivating and mowing. He planted a large garden and was pleased with the bounty it provided.
Activities Dave was fond of doing to relax included any sort of puzzle- crosswords, Fill-It -Ins, Sudoku, and variety puzzles. Jigsaw and 3D puzzles were popular in the winter.
In his early and mid years, Dave was a fervent numismatist and philatelist. He always checked for unique coins and stamps while travelling. He was not averse to going to antique shops in Victoria to find stamp and coin treasures from the past and packing them home for storage.
Dave loved cats. Apparently, he was building “cat houses” as soon as he could hold a hammer and nails. All cats were important but the injured or weak received its own cat house and heat lamp. Every evening Dave became the pied piper. He prepared a pail of milk at the house, walked to the barn, with 25-30 cats lined up single file behind him.
Attendance at coffee row was required twice a day, every day. One could not miss the daily news.
David was predeceased by his parents, Thomas A. and Ruth F. (Lawson) Banks; his first wife, Doreen (Brown); and by his brothers, Thomas Jr., Hubert (Dib), and John.
David is survived by his dear wife, Cheryl; his sister, Hazel Banks; and by his nieces, nephew, and their families, Camille (Orville) Sedgwick, Deborah (Orin) Sorensen, and Sam (Debbie) Banks.
