David Unger Obituary

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of David (Dave) Unger in the early hours of March 28, 2024 with his wife by his side. We are comforted to know that he is in the arms of Jesus. Following his terminal cancer diagnosis, his desire was to be at home until the end. We are so thankful this was possible. We are grateful for the tremendous support provided by his doctors, nurses, and other caregivers.

David was a war baby, born in England to Herman and Beatrice Unger on June 25, 1944. He came to Canada with his mother on the Queen Mary to begin his life in Canada, growing up in the McMahon area. After high school, he attended DeVry in Toronto. Upon graduation, he joined SaskTel, where he remained for his career, and it was there he met his wife, Rose (Rosella). After working in Saskatchewan, he had the opportunity to work overseas for SaskTel International.

David discovered his two driving passions early on: electronics and music. His curiosity for electronics ultimately led him to PCs and programming, becoming the go-to person for friends and family for all their computer concerns. He taught himself guitar by listening to songs on the radio, his favourite artist being Chet Atkins. He became quite proficient and joined the dance band, The Playboys, performed with the community group The Big Band, and taught private guitar lessons. Eventually his focus was classical guitar. He often played at the Alliance Church, but his favourite performances were at his daughters’ weddings.

David was the epitome of the self-taught curious man. These traits drove his learning of electronics, guitar, sailing, and gardening. He loved piloting his sailboat at the Saskatchewan Landing. When he moved to the acreage, he became the consummate vegetable farmer, producing wheelbarrows-full of carrots, potatoes, and tomatoes. Anyone who knew David knew that he loved to tease and joke - everyone was fair game, especially his beloved grandchildren.

One of his favourite games, played with both his kids and grandkids, was “Sleeping Giant”. It took one of his grandkids a long time to realize that “it was so he could nap!” His time spent with his daughters and their families was so precious to him. This was his ultimate treasure.

David was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Beatrice Unger. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Rose; daughter Lisa (Gerry) Kehler of Georgia and their children, Taliesin, Caedmon, and Soren; daughter Lana (Glenn) Reves of Alberta and their children, Danielle and Aidan; brother Noel Unger.

To honor David’s wishes, there will be no service.
