Dorothy McIver

Dorothy McIver, age 89, of Swift Current, SK, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026 at The Meadows in Swift Current with family by her side. Dorothy Evelyn McIver was born on December 2, 1936 in Cabri, SK to Andrew & Mabel (Herring) Johnston.  She was the youngest of eight surviving children. Dorothy attended grades one through eight in the Idaho District in Hazlet, then took grade nine by correspondence. She attended the Swift Current Collegiate for grade 10, then returned to Hazlet to finish her last two years as a new high school had been built there. On October 14, 1955 Dorothy married Archie McIver at the First United Church in Swift Current. Dorothy & Archie made their home on his dad’s farm until 1974, when they sold the farm and moved to Alberta — first Calgary, and then Medicine Hat. In 1983, Dorothy & Archie moved to Swift Current and opened Nutters Bulk Food in the Wheatland Mall. They operated the store until their retirement in 1989, when they returned to Hazlet to live. After retirement, Dorothy & Archie travelled, enjoying some time in Arizona one winter, and summer fishing trips in northern Saskatchewan. Auntie “Dot” enjoyed cooking and baking, gardening and flowers, crocheting, and camping. Her home was attentively cared for, with family pictures displayed along with some favourite sentimental ornaments. Dorothy had great personal style and was typically fashionably dressed. Family and friends were always warmly welcomed — the coffee pot was always on and cookies or other baking at the ready. Dorothy is survived by her nieces and nephews, Linda (Ken) Pattison, Marilyn (Dave) Williams, Julie Bassen, Melody McGowan, Darlene (Ray) Johnston, Duane Johnston, Carolyn Fulton, Gerry (Amy) Johnston, Bruce Johnston, Brian (Denise) Johnston, Don McIver, and Gail (Fred) Smith; and by her sisters-in-law, Lillian Johnston, Zelma Boyce, Jean Johnston, and their families. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Archie McIver, whom she missed very much; her parents, Andrew & Mabel Johnston; her parents-in-law, Don & Edith McIver; her sister, Leona (Ron) Forbes; her brothers, Baby Johnston, Wilbur (Magdalene) Johnston, Lester (Lucille) Johnston, George Johnston, Norman Johnston, Gordon Johnston, and Robert (Marie) Johnston; and by her nephews, Ken Johnston, Gary (Carolyn) Johnston, and Greg Johnston.

The Graveside Service was held on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at 2:00 pm from the Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with Funeral Celebrant Mandy Penner officiating. In memory of Dorothy McIver, donations made to STARS, 570 – 1441 Aviation Park NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 9Z9 or to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301 – 2550 – 12th Avenue, Regina, SK, S4P 3X1 would be appreciated by the family.
