Dorothy Schwartz Obituary

Dorothy Schwartz, age 92, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2022 surrounded by her family at the Meadows, Swift Current, SK.

Dorothy was born July 21, 1930 to Ernest & Edith Iles on the family farm by Webb, SK. She grew up on the farm and spent many hours with her big brother, “Bud,” and her dad doing outdoor chores.

Dorothy attended the Prosperous Valley Country School and then completed grades 8 – 12 by correspondence. She loved to read —her husband said that she even read the dictionary — and wanted to be a teacher, but that all changed the day Ron Schwartz came to Webb.

Ron & Dorothy were married on September 27, 1947. They were blessed with a son, Harley James, on November 28, 1948. Sadly, he only lived for thirteen hours. Ron & Dorothy had the telephone office in their home at Webb and in 1955, they purchased Imperial Oil in Webb. Ron drove the fuel truck and Dorothy ran the office.

On June 3, 1956 their daughter, Mary Lou, was born. When she was 5 days old, Dorothy started bringing her to work and she also rode many miles with her dad, delivering fuel. They made many wonderful memories as a family. Ron & Dorothy moved to Swift Current, SK on July 5, 1965. Dorothy lived in her own home until 2016, when her diagnosis with macular degeneration meant it was time for her to move to the Meadows. Though she went reluctantly, it was a good move for her, and she enjoyed it there.

Dorothy loved her kittens and always had at least one, sometimes as many as six at one time. She took great pride in her home, she was cleaning all the time and Bud  liked to joke that she swept her way out of the house. She also spent many hours outside, working in her yard and tending her flowers. Her grandchildren always said that Gramma made the best pie and butter tarts.

Dorothy was a humble, thankful, and kind person who never had a bad thing to say about anyone or anything and never got angry. She had a very special relationship with her brother and as the years passed, it became stronger. Dorothy was very fond of her son-in-law, “Bobby,” and they were very close. Family was incredibly important to Dorothy, and she loved them deeply.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Ron Schwartz, in 1988; her son, Harley James, in 1948; her parents, Ernest & Edith Iles in 1993; and by her brother, Rueben, and sister-in-law, Alice.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou (Bob) Rindahl; her granddaughter, Jennifer (Ryan) Plewis, and great-granddaughters, Mila, Annika, and Piper; her grandson, Jordan (Heather) Rindahl, and great-grandson, Jonas; her nieces and their families, Jeanette (Jim) Szigety, Delea (Steve) Huntley, and Donna (Greg) Willman.

The Funeral Service for Dorothy Schwartz was held on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at 2:00 pm from the Swift Current Funeral Home Chapel, Swift Current, SK with Beverly McLean officiating. The Scripture reading was Psalm 23. Dorothy’s great-granddaughter, Mila Plewis, read a poem, “Grandma’s Gone to Heaven.”

The Interment Service was held following the Funeral Service from the Webb Cemetery, Webb, SK with Jordan Rindahl, Ryan Plewis, Greg Willman, Jerry Biese, Kyle Furseth, and Myron Furseth serving as Pallbearers.

In memory of Dorothy Schwartz, donations made to the Swift Current SPCA would be appreciated by the family.
