Dorothy “Dot” B. Hagel (nee Stang) came into the world on January 1, 1937 in Macklin, SK to Joseph A. & Clara Stang. Dorothy grew up as one of seventeen children raised on the farm at Macklin.
She married Anthony J. “Tony” Hagel of Lancer, SK on July 31, 1956 at St. Mary’s Church, in the Macklin District. Tony & Dot then began their life together on the Hagel homestead at Lancer. Dot settled into a life of farming, cattle, and children, where she became a more than capable farm wife and mother. Together, Tony & Dot raised nine children — Thomas, Paulette, Jerome, Bernadette, David, Cynthia, Terrance, Bruce, and Amanda.
Dot took on her role as a wife and mother with love and dedication. She was a magician in the kitchen and her family knows how blessed they were to have such creativity, skill, and passion for food, living, and giving for them. Dorothy excelled at many things that complimented the household — she was a tireless gardener, growing multitudes of food and flowers.
She got involved in the life of the community, taking leadership and support roles in the Catholic Women’s League, Donor’s Choice Charities, church and community choir, and her children’s school events — she was always willing to lend herself and her talents to others.
Dorothy loved to sing. She had pitch perfect harmony and every song she sang was better because of her lovely alto. Tony & Dot instilled that love of music into their family and it always was, and still is, a huge part of the Hagel and Stang experience. Heaven’s choir has a new voice.
Dot was an avid reader, with Harlequin romance novels being her favorite. She enjoyed word search and crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, taking pictures and making photo collages, and spending time with the family. She loved babies and would always welcome the chance to cuddle one.
One of Dot’s greatest gifts was her love, openness, and welcoming smile for anyone who came to her door. No one felt out of place, all were treated as family, and she never let you get away without something to eat and a hug. Her heart was as big as the prairie sky she lived under — all who knew Dorothy will agree to that.
Dorothy “Dot” Hagel, age 85, left this world for Heaven on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at the Prairie Health Care Centre, Cabri, SK. Dorothy leaves her memory to her nine children and their spouses; her seventeen grandchildren, her fourteen great-grandchildren; her three surviving siblings and their families; her numerous nieces and nephews; and the communities of Lancer and Cabri, where she gave and received so much joy.
A life of 85 years meant that Dot said goodbye to many of her dearest ones, family and friends alike, and the joyous reunion with her dear husband, Tony, who passed in 2004, and all the rest will be amazing. May she and all of them rest in peace.
Dorothy’s family would like to thank the care team at Prairie Health Care Centre in Cabri for their love and compassion for her in these past few years, especially in these last few months — may you be blessed for that. Also, to everyone who expressed your love for Dot to her family in the days before and after her passing, we say thank you. Your kindness is testimony to her love, God bless you.
