Jacob Erdman “Ed” Wiens was born on September 3, 1946 at Swift Current, SK to Jacob & Marie Wiens, and grew up on the family farm in Wymark. He enjoyed working in the family store/service station. After graduating in 1964 Ed attended the University of Saskatchewan specializing in biology, leading to a career in entomology research at the University. Ed married Heather (Hay) on Nov 19, 1966 and their first daughter, June, was born in 1967 and their second daughter, Jenise, in 1970. Ed’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident early on. Even though he worked full time, he started many independent businesses to earn extra money for his “fun” passions which included skiing, motorcycling, sailing, and a lifelong passion for flying. In 1983 Ed was ready for a change and when a business opportunity presented itself in Swift Current, he created Wiens Petroleum which later branched into Wiens Agritec. Ed built many friendships through both work and play. He loved to be with people and would lend a hand whenever he could. He was always looking for an excuse to have a party. Planning these was where his creativity really got to shine. The ordinary was never quite good enough. Ed always needed things to be a little bit “more”. His culinary inspirations were delicious and will be dearly missed. In 2010 Ed started a life with Denise who had two girls of her own, Karissa and Jessica. He loved to travel, and this was evident as you could never keep track of where he was or where he was off to next. In the last few years, he spent a lot of time in Kaslo, BC, Bucerias, Mexico, and in Swift Current. His final trip to Croatia was at the top of his list of favorite destinations. He was immensely proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments and loved spending time with his great-grandchildren.
